Newegg sent me an email for a 10% discount for new customers. I have been planning to buy an Intel 320 series, 120 gb, ssd based on DST4me recommendation. When I went to the Newegg link for it, they also have a $25. rebate good through tomorrow, 10-14-2011. So I ordered one and will get both deals. Anyone can get the rebate if you order by tomorrow. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167050
I plan to buy an ODE 1 soon and will install the ssd when I get it.
Posting this in case anyone is interested in adding an ssd to their pc.
This one is highly recommended by DST through several posts.

Yes, you have, plus the ssd will also include intel migration software.
Something I was wondering about though, since I will be installing in a new ODE 1 with the original HD which will only have the os on it at that point, would it work to just copy the HD and paste to the ssd? That is the way I normally move files around.
Also, is it simpler to change the boot order in bios to go to ssd first or leave bios as is and switch the HD sata cable to the ssd and connect the new sata cable to the HD?

You can't move all os files and etc by copy/paste, you have to clone, mbr and such files are not even seen to copy and paste.
if you look at my guide for cloning, you will see that the source drive needs to not be connected when the destination drive goes to boot after cloning. you don't want to have 2 hdds with the same os bootup at the same time. once you have booted off of the ssd and all works fine, connect the hdd back to the system as hdd 2 and format it. Since the os is new you could just use the image disk and restore the image on the ssd instead, but that way your sectors will not align correctly, it is for this reason that you want to use acronis 2011 or the the tool that comes with intel ssd. Ok, so first I clone the hdd to the ssd. Then second, I disconnect the sata cable to the hdd. Then I restart and the pc should boot up off of the ssd. Then I need to reconnect the sata cable to the hdd and format it which will delete everything on it.
Do I have the sequence right?

That right, after clone in the bios make sure the ssd is set as the first thing to boot off of.

One more question, I have a Dell laptop with XP and an HP laptop with Vista. They each have different F keys to press to get to the boot sequence. Will the Windows 7 instructions lead me to the F key to press during startup to get to boot sequence so I can change it? Or can you tell me how to do it?

Just keep pressing delete till you get into the bios, there you need to change the boot sequence.
the method you are talking about with dell and hp are believe is the one for changing sequence on that boot onlly. boot sequence in bios has nothing to do with os. Edited by DST4ME - 14 Oct 2011 at 5:34pm |
