I was looking through some of the sites I normally visit this morning and saw some troubling news. Those waiting on Nehalem to purchase an overclocked gaming system, may wish to keep an eye on this story.
I had hoped Intel would not do this when I first saw they intended to integrate the memory controller in Nehalem, but it looks like AMD might be the only route for the mainstream buyer to pursue an overclocked system after the socket LGA775 passes into history. Fudzilla is sometimes a little hit and miss, so I would not take this as gospel just yet, but it's something to watch for. Edited by Tyler Lowe - 22 Apr 2008 at 10:18am |

That would be an extremely stupid move if they do try it. They would alienate a decent percentage of their market....then again, big companies tend to do stupid things like this because they are completely out of touch.
Hopefully this is just a silly rumor.

honestly im not too worried. intel has been around for a pretty strong rule and they didnt get there by being some huge company who plays the crowd (like blizzard) to achieve a huge community base.even the article says they arent too sure how intel would be able to get away with this. I can tell you this though, intel can do whatever they like to try and prevent overclocking, but anyone from the "computer guru" community can tell you that if we want something we will get it. from what i gather out of the article, it seems like a move to push people into buying more expensive peices to get what they want. depending on the actual cost difference, the market will just shift around them. either by someone designing a peice to install and override them, mobo bios hacks, switching to a new company... etc.

So, how successful you been at unlocking the multiplier on Intel's non-Extreme CPUs? With transisters to burn and an unalterable die, Intel can do just about anything it damn well pleases and price it in such away that you'll be glad to take it.

I'm a gamer and not a serious pc enthusiast. I don't really get into overclocking, however, I like the idea that I could overclock my stuff if I wanted to. Starting out knowing that it would be nearly impossible to do so would be a factor in my future purchase. If given the choice, I would go with the option of a cpu that could be overclocked, whether INTEL or AMD or even someone else if they were the only game in town for overclocking. Price would always be a factor and I try to stay closer to entry level to bang for buck pc stuff.
