Topic: Intels new 2011 socket Posted: 18 Aug 2010 at 9:21am |
The new top of the line socket from Intel, so many rumors, and unknowns. I would like to start a thread, that has news/fact/pics of this new socket. I have some info on it, some pics of it, and some screen shots of it running, but if anyone else has info please post it up!!
The new socket will no longer have an Intel ICH10, or 11, from what I have heard.
But will offer native SATA 6Gb's
PCI 3.0 up in the air, but looking like no at the moment
4 Channel RAM, but only 4 slots, so 8Gb will be the standard build, and no real upgrade for RAM, unless you go to 4GB high density sticks, for 16GB.
The new larger socket will have two latches, instead of one. This addresses a problem on the current CPU's, they keep getting larger and larger, and with the large new CPU's there can be a pressure difference, with the CPU-to-socket contact, from side, to adjacent side, so with 2 latches, it helps to evenly distribute the pressure.
here is a pic, you can see a latch on each side.
the size of the heatsink holes have been rumored to be same/different. but it is confirmed it will be the same as the 1366 socket, so coolers, water blocks should fit. here is a pic.
and here it is running, we can see this is a 8 core, running 16 threads, and see the L1, L2, L3 cache sizes, and a couple other specs. lol

ask them nicely, or just hound them every day.
Also just a side note, most already know, but to kill any rumors, lol This socket will use DDR3 RAM, DDR4 RAM won't be in mass production till 2015.. spec..2150Mhz--4200Mhz at 1.2V lol wowser.

you will need one more stick of RAM, lol still would work with 3 sticks though.
don't know if there will be lower voltage requirements for the new socket?

So does this mean I should wait until the new socket is up before upgrading? The soonest I could afford to upgrade is christmas.

we'll have to see the performance numbers first, i wouldnt hold out for too long though, there will be another socket in not too long, waiting is a losing game |

still, the 2011's are the real-deal multi-threaded powerhouses. I've wondered, seriously, for gaming, you think the 1155's would be a better option? I mean, 8 virtual cores was already a helluva lot to use, and the 1155's max out there, with a lot higher clocks too. Just dunno whether modern gaming would really catch up with multi-threaded.

I can max out a 4Ghz 12 thread CPU now on lost planet 2.. so that direction is coming. |

2011
1366 has been top for 2008, 2009, 2010, and will end it reign in 2011.

I am considering waiting for socket 1155 before buying a new rig, I am still using 775. How long after a socket's release does digital storm usually start building gaming rigs on the new board processor combos?

DS will be making rigs with the new socket as soon as they are available to the public

I'm not even sure what sockets are but when this comes out, does that mean the 1366's are going to turn bad or something and be far behind the 2011?

1366 will not turn bad, just be out dated, like the 775 socket before it. Just like when AMD releases its new Bulldozer CPU, and it will not fit AM3 socket.

1366 will still have it's uses, and will still be a good performer but if it's a cheap as hell upgrade why not |

the majority of consumer line sandy bridges are gonna be quad core, hecta-core by HT anyways. so the real only advantage they have is possibly higher clock speeds. 2011, so far, I think there's only one confirmed consumer variant? and that's the one that's hecta-core, sixteen core via HT.

You're going to have to get a whole new motherboard that supports the socket itself and maybe even backwards compatible with 1366, unfortunately it's not like switching out a vid card.

however, LGA1366 cooling solutions ARE slated to be perfectly compatible with LGA 2011. ^^.

Oh yeah it'll be good for a few more years, and much like the 970 or 980x what would you do with a hecta core cpu if we can't even get full use out of a six core processor

lol it seems like some people are misunderstanding.. new tech coming out does not all the sudden make current tech bad. I was playing most current titles on 775 until very recently, including crysis, mw2, sc2..
i mean was i crushing max fps in all the games, no. but my computer was 3 years old and i was still playing and enjoying these newer games
i guess what im trying to get across is that eye candy does not a good game make... having all the visual frills in a game doesnt make it have a better story, features, controls, etc etc etc and 1366 will be playing current and future titles for a long, long time Edited by !ender_ - 27 Aug 2010 at 8:58am |

its already gonna be a good idea NOT to immediately upgrade when LGA2011comes out initially, give it some time to iron out the problems. remember the first X58 boards? gah, that was messed up.

just the Asus boards.. my Gigabyte was very good, right out of the gate. but yes, it is usually good to wait and see if there are very many issues when new hardware is released.

i read that you wont be able to overclock them unless you buy a k series, wonder how much extra those will be =/
i also read that they are beta testing selling the "right" to overclock seperately
