Hello All,

I came across digitalstorm when looking at an article on sharky extremes website and am I thinking of purchasing a PC from DS.

I am a bit worried though about the shipping, maybe some buyers from canada who frequent these forums can post their experience... any damage on delivery?  DS, maybe you guys can just relay your experience shipping to canada, any issues with the hardware?

I appreciate anyones input.  Here is the PC I was thinking of purchasing, maybe some of you pc gurus can give some advice, is this pc a piece of *rap or is it a good system for gaming?

Thanks again,

In the past, I purchased a customized rig from Voodoo PC (Calgary Canada, I believe) and other than the customs check, transit went smoothly. However, the system had problems out-of-the-box and had to be returned for repair . Again, customs played a role. If you're willing to add a day or two for the border patrol, it's not a problem.

Give your business to the boutique that will give you EXACTLY the system you want. And one that stands behind their workmanship.

XP and Vista are both fine for gaming. Some people are just bias because XP has been out for so long.

Two HDDs have to be identical for a RAID 0 setup. 750GB is sort of overkill don't u think? How much space have you taken up on your computer right now...?

I suggest getting a sound card over a physics card. As not much games use a physics card, it isn't really worth $200 at this point.

The rest look good.

Shipping is really dependent on luck.. some delivery drivers are "idiots" while others are very nice. If you are worried about shipping, you can pay for air shipping or pay for another courier.
The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star.

Install both :)

I have XP, 64 bit Vista, and 64 bit Ubuntu on my rig in a triple boot configuration.  It isn't really hard to do.  Vista supports doing dual boot for the boot loader (so long as it is microsoft of course).

On whether Vista is buggy I can't answer for 32 bit Vista but 64 bit is a little buggy.  The same games that run fine on XP often crash in Vista.  I hate microsoft in general so I don't have a horse in this race, but honestly, in my opinion Vista is inferior RIGHT NOW for games:

Negatives:
Many games (older ones) just don't work.
Other games crash often.
Vista requires approximately 3 times the memory to do the same thing as XP can do
If you want 64 bit edition you have to order and pay $10 for it.  Yet on the box it says it is 64 bit and 32 bit.  I think that is just duplicitous as all get out

Pros:
I like the fact that they changed the interface so it makes more sense.  In many instances you do things completely different than in XP. I count that as a pro, I know many will count it as a con.

Direct X 10

(just because it is 64 bit) Can support up to 128 GB of RAM

Aero interface looks kind of cool, not as good as Compiz or Beryl in my opinion, but nice.

The OS makes sure programs always ask you if you want them installed.  This is nice in case you are picking up software you did not expect.

If you want the best of both worlds then dual boot.  I bet that DS would configure it that way for you if you want.

Christopher,

Can you post your system specs,  this dual boot thing is interesting.  How do you have to set up your HDD's?  Do you have to install your games on both operating systems?

SkyR covered the main points, but I'll add:

XP is just fine for gaming.  Games coming out now and next year were built for XP and Direct X 9.0c, and for now, Direct X 10 (vista only) is only showing to cause a performance reduction rather than be a groundbreaking innovation.

The Hellgate:London demo is unplayable on a dual core 2.0 ghz, 2gb Vista Home Premium machine on all but the absolute lowest settings, for example.

That's just a real-world, personally witnessed example I can provide.

Definitely don't need the physics card - only a handful of games support it.  Get the Fatal1ty sound card instead - it will help performance and give great sound if you have speakers that can take advantage of it.

Whether or not you need an Ultra or a GTX video card is purely up to you - the performance increase of the Ultra is minimal when you consider the price difference.

You don't really need a lightscribe DVD burner.  I have one and have used that feature twice.  Not really worth it.

That has two hard drives, not in a raid, but with a very fast main drive for your OS, and a 250 secondary drive for games, etc.
