I have read many gamers from all types of background say that when playing FPS games online, a gaming mouse is recommended.

To those who have one from Logitech or Razer or any brand, how much of an advantage is there over the normal ones? Any good brand you can recommend (preferably other than Razer b/c of driver issues)? I know the DPI is high and I'm starting to have some annoying cramps on my left wrist with a normal 6 - 7 year old mouse (non-gaming Logitech) both in online games and in regular use.

Ive always perfered a gaming mouse because they have alot better lazers and more buttons, and alot of companies even have a series for MMO Games like world of warcraft. But no i dont think they are necessisary, its just for hardcore gamers that want nothing but the best in my opinion. Better mouse responsiveness means you wont have any miss-clicks, and like I said they usually come with a wide variaty of buttons...I use this mouse from razor for world of warcraft, really helps when your healing to have all the extra buttons for macros! It has 5600dpi Lazer... http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.169418900/categoryId.35208800

Razor is a VERY good gaming keyboard and mouse company.

Logitech has a decent selection + gaming grade headphones and headsets

I personally think gaming mice are great and better than your standard mouse. Their are generally more varied shapes to the mice at the "gaming level". And that's what i think is the most important is that you like how they feel in the hand as most will perform fine sensor wise.

I have tried Razer Lachesis & Deathadder, Logitech G9X & G500, SteelSeries Kinzu, & the Mionix 5000. Out of all of them I felt the Logitech G9X was the best in every way except maybe the cord was a tad too stiff if i were being picky.

I was looking at a display model of the R.A.T 7 and it felt surprisingly solid; I thought it would feel cheap and flimsy. Though I hear it has sensor problems on some mats.

So yeah try a gaming over regular mouse. Anyways that's my 2cents

definitely more about feel and most importantly friction, which means gaming mousepad too

obviously, it depends on what kind of games you play, turn based, a mouse obviously wouldnt matter. but the faster the game needs you to be, the more your kb/mouse/mousepad matter. and it is of course helpful to have more buttons and profiles

i personally use the roccat kone, which not only looks fantastic, comes with interchangable weights, has custom colors and a great overall feel, but performs very well also
i also use a razer exact mat as i prefer using a wrist pad

----

the mx518, which i used for years, is a fantastic mouse if you are on a budget

overall, the dpi probabaly doesnt matter too much in most games, its more important to have a mouse that feels good and comfortable than pretty much anything else

DPI is not a big deal on small monitors, but on large ones it becomes a big deal

Yes there is a very noticeable difference. You don't have to break the bank to get good quality though. Like ender said the MX 518 is a great mouse and the one I've used for years. There are probably better mice out there, but it just fits my hand so perfectly that I've found no need to change. As soon as my last MX 518 died and was forced to use my old non gaming mouse, I too started feeling cramps in my hands and wrist.

I have the MX 518 paired up with this mouse pad. Works great for me. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817114174&cm_re=xtrac_mousepad-_-17-114-174-_-Product

Thanks guys for the help.

Looks like the Logitech G500 on Newegg is $38 after the $20 rebate (lasts until 10/16/10) so I will be getting it along with the Xtrac mouse pad (will definitly go in style with my Wacom Bamboo Hahaha), thanks Invader Mig for the link.

That's a good deal. I think you'll like the G500. It's just a little different then the MX518 in shape with a laser sensor.

I think mine is also 800 DPI, can't really tell but it's optical. Thanks for your thoughts.

Gaming mice are a must for me at least. I've gotten so used to the contoured shape of my mouse that I can literally say that I can use it as if it were an extension of my hand. The thing is, I keep finding myself raising my sensitivity in game (not DPI, sensitivity), and meh, it's just reached a point where it's not working out anymore. Maybe it's time to move up from the 1800dpi DeathAdder (old one) to 5600 dpi, heh.

And yes, Razer has a crapload of driver issues. My Tarantula bricked itself during a flash, lol, I was luckily able to reflash it somehow. Just got lucky there. Ditched it a few months later b/c the keys were just too darn short to be effective for me.

Might not wanna start at 5600dpi at the beginning though? I mean, 800dpi to 5600 is a massive jump, it took me a few weeks to get used to 1800dpi when I first got my DeathAdder. Been 1 yr with this thing and the 1800dpi is finally starting to bottleneck my performance a bit.

I have a G500 as well after MX518, and I love it.. But I love Logictech Mice and Keyboards, though it is biased as I have never owned Razer products.
Will be making when I find 15 mins of play time.

Mouses that i've owned and that i can remember about.
So I'm not making any opinions on the crap Dell mouses that is included with their cheap free combo's or the very first Logitech optical mouse that is basically dells free mouse combo.

I cant remember that far back about microsofts first opital, looked a lot bigger and felt better than logitechs but I remember hating it for CS

-Logitech G500
-Logitech MX300
-Logitech MX310
-Logitech MX500
-Logitech MX518
-Logitech G7
-Logitech MX1000 (sucked)
-Logitech MX1100 (was replacment from Logitech for faulty MX1000)
-Logitech Revolution (was included with keyboard)

-Microsoft Sidewinder

-Nyko Airmouse (it has a cool little fan that blows sweat off your palms lol)

-Razer Salamander
-Razer Diamondback
-Razer Viper
-Razer Copperhead ? or Templar (templar might've been the color option Blue)
-Razer Deathadder
-Razer Mamba

-Steelies World of Warcraft Mouse
-Steel Series XAI

-ROCCAT Pyra

Everyone one of the razer mouses died on me
except for the Mamba which is only few months old
and Copperhead (but turns off on me randomly as in unplugs)

the Logitechs all been great (G7 usually lasted me 2 year ratio)
G500 Died after 7 months, left click didnt work.

Steel series just feels too cheap for me

incase you were interested in any of those i had

Performance wise, I perfer Logitech.
But then again Razer mouses are fairly more accurate.
which is why I have a hard time getting used to Razers.
My mamba is so sharp and accurate, I literally have to put mouse settings to nearly 0 lol.
the 5600 DPI is too much for me, I perfer 800-1200 dpi.

Logitech G7 felt perfect for me, the DPI just right. Weight and spoiled me to the wireless world, which is why I jumped onto the Mamba.
ROCCAT is like a mamba, almost same features but feels weird, I wasnt feeling it.
my girlfriend has it now, and she loves it. pretty much the mamba
