i'm getting ready to order a ds pc and am wondering what magnitude performance benefit i'll get by overclocking the cpu. my pc will be an i7 930, 6gb ram, 5850 gpu, ssd plus hdds, etc. the pc will be used primarily for raw image and occaisonal video manipulation plus some occasional light gaming...i view the overclock as costing about $100 since i have to get additional cooling to accommodate the heat generated (haf 922 case). so my question is this--for the build i'm doing and for the stuff i'm going to do, is it worth getting the cpu overclocked--will i notice a difference and if so how much? thanks!

technically it is, but with the cpu upgrade you probably need to upgrade the cooling which i wouldn't do otherwise....that's why i'm thinking it's effectively another $100 for the good air cooling fans, at least for me.

stock cooling for processors falls somewhere between weak and pathetic
a 930, at stock, runs at 2.80ghz
the q6600 processor in my near 3.5 year old computer runs at 3.2ghz
my processor would bench higher than the 930 if you didnt overclock it.
and yes i know this because i compared my q6600 (oc) to my i7 875k (stock+turbo) and the q6600 won
the chips are made to overclock, in fact, the 930 IS an overclocked 920
not using it, in my opinion, would be like getting a stick shift and only using first and 3rd gear
i am by no means saying that YOU HAVE TO OVERCLOCK OMG but... you will be sitting on a lot of unused power if you dont. im not even sure id be ok with reccomending turbo be left on with a stock heatsink lol
as far as the benefit, just look at any benchmark test ever for overclocking a 9xx chip, and see how much faster it does everything Edited by !ender_ - 24 Jul 2010 at 11:26am |

Actually, overclocking would save you money. feel free to correct me on this, but i believe all the 9XX chips are the same, excluding the hex cores. when oc'd with $100 cooling, your 920 becomes faster than a stock 975 that would cost you $750 dollars more.

ok, i here you. sounds like photoshop and other apps that i use a lot will be reasonably faster with overclocking. next question is how much to do. i care more about stability than max speed. thx, i just spent another hundred bux on my pc...

Yeah even if you don't overclock get a quality heatsink. It'll allow overlcocking in the future. And as isender said that stock heatink is just bad. I couldn't really believe how bad the quality was the first time I tried to put one on. Just the way it mounts is poor compared to the Noctua's they sell here.
