Indifferent.... Sure, it's a good idea once in awhile. I don't do it very often, but apparently often enough that I've never noticed any change in performance afterward.
 
I've recently read an article asserting that defraging you disks will make them alast longer. That's a tough point to prove.

Its only good if your drive needs a defrag (once every 3 to 6 month).

for ssd drives you are not suppose to defrag them.

I have a program that auto defrags the Hard drives whenever the computer is idle, its pretty nice. It starts up about a minute after idle, and then shuts it down when you come back and start to use it again.

  Good to know that about SSD's. I was unaware of that info. My question is why though? Does the ssd arrange the data automatically when programs are removed and installed? I do know that for non ssd's when an HD is defragged the heads spend less time searching for data than it does if the information was scattered around the HD. Less seeking time means longer lasting hard drives, usually. Cool

ssd life span for sectors is dependent on how many times that sector is written to. the greater number of writes to it the sooner it dies off.

SSDs have no seektime, so defrag does nothing for seektime with SSD.

all you are doing is reading and writing and taking away from your SSDs life
