    Posted: 21 Aug 2009 at 2:53am

After months of asking questions (and having them always answered by DST4ME Ermm) I almost went ahead and ordered the Extreme 1...Everything I wanted for under 2K.  Then, with credit card on the table in front of me, I got to thinking about SLI and how it's working/being implemented. So I searched on Google for some games I want to play (Empire: Total War, Arma II) and SLI and got back a ton of results about how SLI isn't read correctly and it causes glitches and there's all this talk on boards about trying to do it this way or that way or downloading this app or that profile.  I also read in some cases I guess there's 3 ways to "run" SLI and you can turn it off altogether...It just seems like a hassle.

DST had me convinced 2x GTX275s was the way I wanted to go but now after reading all that I'm not too sure.  If I'm getting a new comp I want to get 30fps on Crysis maxed at 1920x1200 but I also don't want a solution that is going to be buggy and a pain in the neck when it comes to every other game.  I know 2 GPUs is recommended for 1920x1200 but if the game doesn't support it then what difference does it make?

And one last question.  Does a computer/game read a GTX 295 as one or two cards?

Any insight would be appreciated...I'll buy from here soon...I hope...Dammit! Wink

Well you can disable SLI via the NVIDIA Control Panel, and actually I think you can disable it for specific games under Manage 3D Settings.  So when you're playing a game that supports it well, enable it and take advantage of it, and when you're not, disable it.

The computer sees the GTX295 as two cards, but I am not sure how the Multi-GPU "looks" to a game.

Don't believe everything you read kooch66, you have to consider the source. lot of people on the net have no idea what they are talking about but go around acting like they do, I call them fakexperts, we have one here, I won't name him, he knows who he is.

anyways, as the members around here and they will tell you that if a game correctly supports sli there is no problems.

for games that do supports sli and res of 1900 x 1200, 2 x 275 is the way to go for sure. but for games that don't support sli only one GPU will come to play. turning off sli in Nvidia control panel is a very simple thing, it has 2 steps, open Nvidia control panel (either from your task tray (where the clock is), or right click your desktop and and click on Nvidia control panel. Once there go to "set multi GPU" section and click or unclick "multi GPU", Done.

it takes less then 20 sec.

a 295 GTX is in an internal sli, so when you play games that don't support sli you will have to do the steps above to disable sli.

you are going to be just fine with 2 x 275, if all the games you play don't support sli, then just go with one 275.

but don't believe everything you read on the net posted by new people that have no idea what they are talking about, those same people will scare you about vista

Thanks for the response...

This is probabaly a stupid question but when you disable SLI in say a 2x 275 rig are you getting full, complete power from one of the cards?  As in the game reads it EXACTLY the same as if you had a rig with only 1 275?

And what's the deal with the modes like AFR or SFR or whatever?  Does it default to something?  Do you have to pick and choose for various reasons depending on the game?  Like I read some people had problms with Vsync and a certain method or something like that...

in sli both cards work to their most ability when needed and with sli disabled one card will work to its full ability when needed.

afr and sfr are ways of rendering a frame, it can be kind of a work around for games that don't support sli at time, afr for example is alternate frame rendering where each card alternates rendering a frame, one card does the even frames and one card renders the odd frames, sfr is split frame rendering where a frame gets split in half if you will, and one GPU will take one half and the other GPU will take the other half, they basically put in 50/50 to render one image.

I've been running with SLI for 3 or 4 years, and it's awesome! It's probably the most important choice you can make to improve the performance of your games. Go for it!
