I've always had this question. Is the unreliability of vista worth dx10, and is the dx10 tweak for xp worth getting xp over vista. Ive looked into this, and there's been mixed opinions. I would like to know, once and for all, which OS is better.

Considering you've heard and/or seen mixed opinions, why would you think you're going to get a definitive answer here? It boils down to preference and how much you think you'd like to take the chance of dealing with issues or not. No one here can give you any better answer than you've gotten anywhere else about Vista vs. XP. I've had no issues with Vista and I'm glad I left XP. I didn't have problems with XP, I just wanted more eye candy and have the latest OS available. Just personal preference.
You can read and hear all you can about it, but you never know until you get it. Good luck. |

Im honestly only going for vista because its basically future proof. The way microsoft has been going trying to shove it down peoples throats by having only certain things work via it, is kinda proof to me enough that they are gonna eventually just pull the plug of support on XP pretty soon.
While i think XP is better overall, Vista cant get any worse (I hope) and it still will be improved in the future. XP is about as far down the rail as its gonna go, i doubt they will be doing anymore updates with it.
Its not as bad as it sounds online, but it definally has a few annoyances.

I ordered a system w/ vista and decided to send it back. Most of the games I play now will not utilize the direct x 10 anyway. For me the aggravation and slowness of Vista was not worth any new features.
I talked to alot of people and got an even 50-50 response. Of the people I spoke to noone was just ok with Vista btw, they either love it or hate it, several people were developers who have a bit more everyday knowledge about software. A few people even suggested I run XP insdide of Vista. I think it comes down to what do you do on your computer.
Overall I am not impressed at all with vista, infact I am very disapointed at how slow it is overall. I don't need eye candy from my OS I'll save that for gaming.

I don't know what you're running with Vista that could make you say it's slow, but I have no issues with the speed of the OS. I don't use Internet Exploder because that browser is slower than Mozilla. If that's what you're referring to, then I can see that you can make that assessment about the speed of Vista. However, IE is slow with XP vs. Mozilla also. If you have enough RAM and processing with Vista you'll have no slowdowns at all. The good news for me? I have eye candy in my OS, eye candy in my gaming and speed in both because my system is built to handle it. What's the lesson? Build a system that will support anything you throw at it and you'll be just fine with whatever OS you decide to purchase. Edited by EdH63 - 27 Mar 2008 at 7:04pm |

Unless you are using some ancient piece of software, Vista is the way to go. With Service Pack 1 out now, most problems that originally came with Vista are taken care of. The only limitation is hardware, and really any computer that you buy nowadays will be fine.

thanks a lot for the advice. I think im going to go with 64 bit vista but with 4 gigs of ram, because i've heard that the 64 bit has less problems, but will only work correctly if one has 4 gigs of ram.

Actually, 64 bit Vista was the more problematic version. And yes, 64 bit sees 4 gigs, so you can go with that set-up and utilize all 4 gigs. 64 bit had less drivers available than the 32 bit version when it was released but it has gotten much better. I will be upgrading to the 64bit version within the next 3 to 4 months. I'm Vista all the way.

I dont have any issues with Vista on my new rig, but I certainly did on my wifes laptop. intel core 3 duo @ about 1.7 with nvidia 7150 and a gig of ram. not nearly enough to be running vista, it was slow as sin and the UAC did me in before i knew what was going on. i reformatted and put xp on it, forced the drivers to load on xp, and am very glad to have done so.
like i said though, my new rig has absolutely no issues with it so far. and i love me some powerboost technology. i think powerboost turned my opinion of vista upside-down. |

You will run into heating issues definitely with a 9800GX2 in a 450S case. You want a 850S or 950S case if you really want to pick the 9800GX2.

4 gigs of RAM in Vista 64 is a good idea.
Go with an X-Fi over the Audigy soundcard, or just do onboard sound. What SkyR said about the case. Everything else looks good. |

well i was trying to decide between the 8800gtx or the 9800gx2. I might go to the gtx because in the future i could add a second w/the power supply i have. Also, im thinking of adding some more cooling fans myself, and i live in maine
so its pretty cold there.
