All,

I need your help. I'm trying to build a gaming rig for under 3,500.. Sounds simple.... BUT ITS NOT! At least not for me. I was hoping you could provide guidance and direction for a lost soul. I have a few must haves as well as a few questions....... For clarification purposes, i play WOW, Oblivion, and uhhhhhhh Age of Empires II. That's right, AOE II. Its a classic. (any recent game on moderate settings with smooth fps would suffice)

MUST HAVES

1. HD Space - at least 3tb, preferably more
2. Blu-ray
3. A monitor wouldn't hurt (non-essential)

QUESTIONS
1. What is a good (expandable) video card to handle the demanding games i provided above.
2. 3gb or 6gb DDR3 RAM?
3. The right Power Supply wattage?
4. i7 2.6ghz or 3.0quad core?

If you guys haven't noticed by now, i am less than perfect on my current computer knowledge, but hey, I've been deployed for 11 months. I've got an excuse.... I greatly appreciate any tips/suggestions/help you can offer.

This fulfills all your requirements and is a very high end rig. The 6gb of ram will have you set, 1000w is enough for you to upgrade more, and i7 is much better than a quad core.

1. normally we would say 295 but for wow I guess 285 is better since it does not utilize sli.

2. 6GB

3. 1000w for 2 x 285 or 3 x 285 but for 3 x 285 1200w might be a better choice depending on your setup.

4. i7 920 2.66GHz OCed

here you go Ticket# 261927 --- Price: $3377 (To see this build click here) Price after current promotion $3177

I would probably by the monitor separately.

I would suggest an Acer 24" Full HD LCD Monitor. It is 16:9, 1920X1080 and can double as an HDTV. You can find them all over the net for under $300...

EDIT: Here's the system I would go with for that monitor.

Pretty nice Acer you suggested, but how would you use it for HDTV?

It has an HDMI connector, which is all you need for most HDTV set top boxes. You should be able to hook your HD cable box/HDR right to it. Of course it doesn't have any internal TV function or speakers but it would work just fine for viewing and you can buy an adapter to hook the sound into your pc or any stereo...

I've seen them listed for around $280-$350 around the net. It's the monitor I should've bought. I grabbed a great deal for a nice 22" before I saw this one. I only paid $150 for this monitor so I really can't complain. Ouch

Of course if you're looking to play your games in 3D, choices are limited. The 3D setup w/22" monitor and glasses runs around $600...

@issues1975, nice config but try and build to the persons needs, he will get more out of a 285 for wow then he will from a 295.

raiding is a bad idea due to data loss, now he already went the wrong way of wanting 3TB of space how ever can you imagine how much data loss he would occur if the raid failed on the 2 x 1TB raid? or if just one of the drives went bad?

also when choosing liquid, try and make sure you match the lighting to it, eg, if you pic UV liquid then pic UV light otherwise the UV liquid is pointless

just some info other then that your build is nice

Geez I didn't know that picking X2 on the media drives meant a raid config. Just figured it meant 2 HDs. Big%20smile

The lighting is definitely a miss on my part. As for WoW, It can still be run on one of the 2 GPUs without major problems and with the rez I recommended for the monitor, I figured it was the best idea for any other games moving forward...

Yes you are right, but since he said his use is going to be mainly wow then a 285 will provide much better performance on a higher res then a 260.

I just thought I pass that on, normally I would have recommended the 295 also, but in this case since he said its for wow mainly, I thought a 285 would serve him better I like the 295 myself
