    Posted: 13 Feb 2010 at 3:27pm

Ok, so I've been shopping around for a LONG time and settled with digital storm, and feel very good about my choice thus far.  I put the order in yesterday, only to realize after it cleared that no tax is charged for out of state orders.  Since I'd been anticipating tax, I now had extra money to play with on the system.  Called em up and Sarah was more than helpful in tweaking my order and getting it processed.  Loving this company.  Been without a computer for almost a year now because I bought from one of those other companies.  Not saying which one cause you'll all laugh at me Smile

I'll post pics when the rig comes in.  In the meantime, here's the breakdown of what I went with..  ((Be gentle, was on a tight budget here))

Great specs, if I can offer some suggestions,

get the i5 750 cpu, it's a great overclocker with no hyper threading malarkey, superb value for the money, and great for gaming.

Change the Asetek to a Noctua 12 or 14 (I believe the only enclosed lc unit worth buying is the corsair h50 because it's a souped up version of the asetek, and all other enclosed lc units are inferior to good air-coolers)

Take all that money you saved and change your gpu to a 5870 its cooler faster newer and only slightly more expensive than the older hotter slower and obsolete 280.

Suggestions are always welcome, thanks :)

I looked long and hard between the i5 750 and the i7 860, and found a lot of numbers in a lot of places showing the 860 as a superior cpu.  Especially in an OC situation.  Take that for what it is I guess, but even if the 860 is only slightly better, and only costs me 20 more dollars...why not? As for the asetek, yeah I've read in several places that it doesnt compare with a good air cooler, problem is all those air coolers were just straight out of my budget.  So I was trying to go with the most decent cooling solution for the least amount of money.  I thought about paying 20 more bucks for the V8, but DS themselves list the asetek as a stage 2, and the V8 as a stage 1.  That may be an error on their part though.  The money I saved upgraded me from a 275 to a 285, and that took me to my cap on what I could spend, so alas the extra $100+ it'd take to boost up to the 5870 just isn't there.  Kinda partial to Nvidia anway.  But i'm just an amatuer lol.  Thanks for the advice!

the asetek is listed as stage 2, but it is not a 'genuine' liquid cooler .. between a high-performance air cooler and a full-performance liquid cooler. the v8 is actually a great air cooler as is the noctua, most times, if not all the time (i don't have the asetek, but the v8) outperforming the asetek.

everything else seems to be fine. the gpu can be upgraded later seeing that you were on a budget. dx11 cards by nvidia will be released soon, so you can start saving for that.

enjoy your new system !!

Yeah, it's an in betweener.  But i think it'll get the job done, espeicially with a lower temp system such as the p55 is.  Now an x58 system.. I'd probably be a little nervous with it. Though I may consider paying $20 more for the v8 if it's as good as you say.

Yep, that's the plan, go with this for now and upgrade later :)
Thanks!

who told you p55 is lower temp? also lower temp on what? gpu had nothing to do with p55, and your cpu has to do with the chip itself, there is no guarantee that you will have lower temps.

with x58 at-least you can upgrade the cpu down the road to have a more powerful pc, as far as temps, you gonna be around the same temps with a 920 @3.7 or an 860 @ 3.7GHz, again there are no guarantees, it all depends on the chip, the 920 cold be higher, the 920 could be lower, its the luck of the draw.

you mayb bottle neck with multi gpu on a p55 tho.

you should have gone with 5870 for better performance on games now and future games, but if you wanted nvidia then you should have gone with a 275 cause the difference is like 4 fps in most games.

I would go with the v8 or Noctua if I were you.

I've read on a few on-hand reviews that put the two boards/chipsets (as far as the i7 860 and i7 920) head to head and found very little difference in performance, but a noticeable difference in heat. http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3649&p=2

I've seen plenty of your posts DST, I know how you feel about reviews and ratings onlilne.. I was using it as a guideline.  It consumes less power.. less power = less heat? The CPU is what we're talking about here.  I don't see myself going to SLI, planning on sticking to a single gpu.  If it gets to the point where I'm going to want to go SLI, if the x8 is a bottleneck concern at that point, I'll plan on a full upgrade then... board/cpu/gpu.

It's a budget deal, the 5870 is just outright too much..  But noted about the 275/285.  It's a big increase in cost for only 4 fps.
I really do appreciate all the suggestions and advice, dont think it falls on deaf ears.  I think I'll call tomorrow and have them tweak the build to this, please advise:

One more thing.. Opinions on mushkin vs corsair ram?  That build leaves a small bit of change leftover, about the cost of upgrading to the corsair memory.  No other upgrades for whats left to play with.

of course the p55 puts out less heat, less power=less heat.
The Mushkin here and the Corsair have the same timings so performance will be the same, so get what is cheaper

I hear overclocking the memory in the corsair is much easier/better. I went with Corsair in mine because it got really good review on Newegg and solid memory chips are important

The order has had it's final tweaking Smile

The GTX 275 is fresh out of stock, with no ETA of when more will come in.. So, that being said, I bit the bullet and stayed with the GTX 285.  The wait is bad enough without extending it with no idea of how long it'll be..
There were also concerns of the Noctua nhd14 fitting on the board, so I went with the Noctua dual 120 instead to avoid any problems there.  So here's the final config, next time you see it will be in the pics Ouch  Thanks everyone!
