First thanks all for your advice. It has been a while since i have purchased a custom built system or for that matter built my own so I am a bit behind in my research. I would appreciate some double checks here.
Budget is 3000-3400 I am also buying a new camera so any money I can save will go into that or new glass. Expectations dual monitors running 1920x1080 no dual graphics cards off the bat but it is not out of the question, if it happens I can swap out the power supply myself if needed. Usage: Gaming and work, think Skyrim as big and sexy as it can get, but also video editing and compression, I use both Adobe Photoshop and Premiere for work. Hard drive space is not an issue for the editing, each project gets its own drive purchased by the client. Special needs: I am concerned about heat, my computer room is above my garage and while it is air conditioned in the summer it houses 3 other computers. North Carolina summers in my computer room can be a AC nightmare we do our best with an extra fan to pull cool air in from the hall but this room was never designed for 3 computers and their heat. Eventually I will have a AC only for this room but that is a bit further down the important list. I need to keep the computer cool while monitoring the temps. Any chance you could drop the fan controller/chassis upgrade and go with a better heatsink? Honestly, getting the Hailstorm and not getting a good liquid cooling loop always seemed a bit silly to me -- that's what the case is designed for. Why get such an expensive case and poke extra holes in it when you can get a cheaper one that already does what you want? Granted, some of the cheaper cases are ugly (cough HAF series cough), but if you're looking to save pennies here and there for your camera that'd be a good place to start.
I'm not sure that a single 680 will be able to handle a dual monitor setup if you plan on maxing everything out. Likely depends how you use your setup. Other than that... RAM might be a bit high (not sure how necessary 2133MHz for photoshop/premiere as opposed to 1600MHz or something less expensive), so I'd check to see just how much of a performance gain that actually offers. And I'd go with the 750 HX over the 800GS. Better overall PSU. Edited by sdelu - 26 Mar 2012 at 2:30pm |

Hi Chillwolf....Welcome...I need to take off...my wife is calling , ....... so off the top, consider changing psu to the 1050hx to allow sli, 2x gpu. For dual monitor if you want to Max out stuff like BF3, etc. you'll really need sli. Also, the fan upgrade adds noise and the fan control is there to quiet noisy fans but does reduce much needed air flow. Others might chime in. See ya later.

Hi Chillwolf,
I agree that the Hailstorm is a poor choice for your system. Even though the CPU is not air cooled the GPU is. You need a case with better air cooling. If there is any chance that you will use double monitors to game or move up to a 2550 resolution you want the 1050 PS. It has a 7 year warranty and is very efficient. If you add it later you will be buying two PS. You also don't need a 6-core CPU and I have included a 4-Core but still the X79 platform. You also need to move up to Win-Pro since you already have 16Gbs of memory. With Win-Home you can't add any more memory. Frank Sorry but the dang configurator is not working again. I will have to manually make changes. Alex please fix this. It may read a little funny but I think everything is there. I appreciate all the feed back and FrankW thanks for laying out a new system. I initially went the 6 core route specifically for Adobe but it appears not to care about core 5 and 6 i had hoped to chase the ever running dream of less render time.
Thanks again for all your time I have some things to chew over. I am ready to get a new machine now just need to sneak it past the wife :) |

Hi Chillwolf,
I wasn't aware you were rendering. You might find an advantage with the 3930 because it has a larger cache. The 3820 has an L3 cache of 10Mb, the 3930 has 12Mb and the 3960 has 15Mb. The cache might help with your render speeds. Of course, more money. With a stage 2 OC they all share the same speed. I also see you mentioned about running other computers in the same room. Are you running a rendering Farm? Frank Edited by FrankW - 27 Mar 2012 at 9:54am |

No nothing quite that cool, I am running a pair of teenage pc gamers, although they are pretty cool except for how much they eat. Lucky one of them will be spending his summer working on the family farm so -1 to the computer room heat factor this summer. I have read some really good things about the 3930 chip I may lean back that way. I wish I could drop a render or even a compression test on both machines before hand, just to see where they stand. Thank you again for all your help. |
