Hello everybody!
I was considering purchasing the configuration on ticket 394623 for heavy rendering (Maya/3DS Max/RealFlow/Vue) and for some gaming. My questions are relatively simple, perhaps I have missed the answers somewhere on the website: Is it possible to get 24GB of ram instead of just the 12GB that appears in the dropdown choices? I realize that it is useless for gaming, but some of my rendering tasks would benefit from it. Are there pictures of the different enclosures conveniently located somewhere? I found a vids of a few of them on the site, a few other pics on the net, but I couldn't find clear (and labeled) shots of all of them in one place to make a selection. With the Stage 6 cooling selection, does that suggest that I should choose the HAF932 because of the large radiator? Finally, is the Touch 2000 Aerocool panel useful, or should I just use a utility to display those values on screen? Really, no point in having all the duplicate SATA/USB/Headphone jacks on the front is there? That is, if they are already on the enclosure...but, since I couldn't find pics of the enclosures, it is difficult to tell. Thanks! |

for LC on cpu/gpu you want to go with corsair 800d (hailstorm).
check out pics here forget touch 2000, there are softwares that will report temps better. what res you gaming at that you picked 2 x 5970? bad idea. this is the ticket number you want unless you are gaming on a 30" monitor then you want 2 x 5870: Here you go Ticket# 394630 --- Price: $6701 (To see this build click here) Price after current promotion $6201 Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Digital Storm HailStorm (Black OPS Edition) Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 980X 3.33GHz (Hexa-Core) (Extreme Performance) Motherboard: EVGA X58 Classified 3X SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports Triple SLI or CrossFire) System Memory: 12GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair Dominator DHX (High-Performance) Power Supply: 1000W Corsair (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (128GB Solid State (By: Corsair) (Model: CMFSSD-128D1 Extream Speed) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Seagate/Hitachi/Western Digital (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) (SATA) (Extreme Speed) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 22x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: Blu-Ray Player/DVD Writer (Play Blu-Ray and Burn DVDs) Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 6: Sub-Zero LCS Dual Loop: CPU & Dual SLI/CrossFire Video Cards & Chipset H20 Tube Color:Blue Tubing with High-Performance Fluid (UV Lighting Reactive) Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (UV) (Creates Glowing Effect for H20 Tubes) Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 3: Overclock the processor between 4.2GHz to 4.4GHz (Requires i7 980X Processor) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: Memory Fan Kit Only (Does not include memory overclocking service) Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate (64-Bit Edition) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: FREE: Please include a free copy of a hot-selling game Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: APC 1300VA Uninterruptible Backup Surge Conditioner (Recommended) Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: Logitech Internet 350 USB Desktop (Multimedia Keyboard + RX300 Optical Wheel Mouse) Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty yes you can request 24GB of ram, but I don't think you can keep stage 3 or even possibly stage 2 oc. |

Thanks for taking the time to look over my config.
I appreciate the advice on the enclosure and the link to the pics. I was considering 3 x 1920x1200 monitors. Maya is a bit of a screen pig when it comes to additional windows. I realize that one HD5970 can drive 3 monitors, but one of them must be native mode, and that would lead to slight color differences across the monitors. hmmm...I didn't realize that 24GB of ram might affect my overclock choices for memory and video cards. Thanks for the heads-up on that. |

the oc on gpu is pointless here cause its low and you will see no gain from it.
for 3 x 1900 x 1200 go with 2 x 5870, its better then 5970, you do realize 5970 is in internal cf, its basically 2 x 5870 on one card but it does not performe as 2 x 5870, 2 x 5870 is better then 1 x 5970. the 24GB might effect your cpu oc. My pleasure and good luck

Oh, wow....you really gave me a lot to think about. I spent a lot of time digging.
I was reading the review at http://www.hardocp.com/article/2009/11/18/amd_ati_radeon_hd_5970_video_card_review/ on page 7 they give some pretty interesting numbers, including overclock freqs, voltages, charts, etc... Although you indicated that OC for GPU was insignificant for my build, the article indicates that 900MHz is stable with the proper voltage tweaks...and 725MHz to 900MHz is not insignificant, it is a 24% increase. Even half of that is amazing for the 5970 since it represents two GPUs. i.e. 24% increase of 2 GPUs. Realistically, I would be thrilled with a 10% increase. Afterall, 10% of a bazillion polygons per second is an additional 100 blahblillion polygons per second. I'll take that any day. It is the very reason that Digital Storms exists, no? HD5970 draws 294W under load stock, but is rated for 400W air cooling (see ATI slides in article listed above) and 540W overclocked...so, 2x5970 needs more than the 1kW PSU recommended. Otherwise, no headroom for drives, fans, pumps, lights, etc. I really want to thank you for bringing up some great points that started me down the research path! That's what it is all about! And exactly what I needed to get off my ass and get involved! I learned a ton, had a great time, and feel great about the order that I am gonna place. Thanks again! My conclusions:
Thanks! |

the ocing DS does is not at 900MHz.
2 x 5970 will not be as good as 3 x 5870, quad scaling is not as good as tri scaling, be careful what you read in reviews. |

totally, it will.
Problems with the interconnect bandwidth. Have you not read that? On card = good...off card = bad, at the moment. |

My reply was not about scaling. It was about:
- Power supply recommendation being too low for 2 x 5970. You recommended 1000W PSU when I originally submitted 1500W PSU ticket....since both cards can draw more than 1kW overclocked. - An indication that video overclocking was not worthwhile when 10% of a billion is still a 100 million polygon increase...and 100Mpg/s increase is kinda sexy. |

the 5970 with a decent overclcock will draw 310-330 watts max, your CPU will draw 200 watts with a good overclock, so with accessories, 900 watts of power draw so 1200 watt power supply is a good idea. The corsair 1000 watt does not do very well when pushed that hard, I would not recomend it for a build with 3 5870's or 2 5890's

there are people running 2 x 295 off of a 1000w corsair that are customers here, without the oc the 1000w is would do but if you want to oc it because of the programs you mentioned then a bigger psu might be a good idea I guess.

Although I re-read the order about 500 times before I pressed buy, the incorrect motherboard is shown on the order....I meant to get the "Classified" version.
I sent a note to customer service with the correction. Silly me. Now to draft up the specs for the crossbars in my custom monitor mounting solution.... |

lol... My first reply from DS regarding my order is to contact my bank and prepare them for a large credit card transaction.
Americans are so funny. ![]() In Canada, we don't worry about that sort of thing. But, I understand that DS has probably seen its fair share of problem purchases. Now...back to my desk and monitor design.... |

I am impressed that they are processing orders at 12:04am on Saturday morning tho.
Actually, I have been impressed by everything so far....but, most of all, I am hoping that these guys that truly have a passion for cranking out systems that are appropriate for every customer, and max'd out in terms of performance are successful. Gateway used to be that way 25 yrs ago...hugely successful...but, then they sold out. I am pumped that you guys appear to be true artisans at crafting systems, and proudly stand by your work. I hope you make millions, and keep kindling the fire of enthusiasts everywhere!! Peace! |

Just ordered 3 x 30" monitors for the new system.
Not the best, but not bad either. 3 yr warranty is kinda nice. They were the 'monitor of the week' special, so $550 off per monitor, so I guess I saved $1650:

Gah, I'm very jealous. I'm okay with my 24" Dell E248WFP for now but after having it for a year and a half I'm starting to notice enough things about it that always makes me feel it is fairly 'meh'. Plus I've always wanted to do a multi monitor setup.

While I am suspended in Stage 1, awaiting my worthiness for Stage 2. I thought I would submit an image from a sequence I am currently creating.
Don't be too harsh, this is just a test render....
![]() I didn't realize that DS had size restrictions. After reducing the image many times, I am able to upload it.

Getting close now :)
Over the past week or so...stage 4, stage 5, stage 6....and...wait for it...stage 7!!!
I was relieved that the HD5970 availablity didn't hold up the order...ATI is still a little tight on supply.
Nice overclock settings too...4.2GHz.
Must've been a snag since it hasn't shipped for 4 days....or maybe it has....is there a stage 8? How do I get the tracking number if there is?
Instead of looking on the dark side, I am DELIGHTED that they are taking every precaution to ensure that everything is perfect. Whatever the issue, I am sure it was a good call.
