Topic: Just ordered a new Vanquish Level 4 system :) Posted: 28 Oct 2013 at 8:34pm |
So late last night I decided to pull the trigger and buy the vanquish system with level 4 specifications. I really loved the look of this system, and the reviews have been great thus far. I've very excited to get this system! It's one of the already assembled systems so it shouldn't be here in too long. I will write a review with pictures once everything has arrived and been set up!
I already own a gaming PC. I built a pc just around 5-6 years ago (can't believe its been that long). I believe it was sometime in November of 2008 The specs are mostly outdated for todays's standards, but it can actually run most of the games I play pretty well. I'm not looking to replace the system I already have, really. It's more going to be just an add on. I think it will be nice to have my current PC as a backup or secondary computer and have the vanquish be my main gaming PC. I'll sometimes have a buddy or 2 come over to play games as well. Many of them have gaming rigs, but they are too heavy (or they are not willing) to haul over. So instead they bring their work laptops which sometimes can keep up, but not always. I think my previous PC will be good to have so when a buddy comes over he can use mine which will still be much faster than his laptop. Here are the specs for the current PC I'm using. I bought the system basically right when the core i7 processors were released. I believe I bought one of the first nehalem models. - Apevia Mid Tower Case - Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66ghz quad core - Gigabyte X58 UD4P motherboard - 2x Nvidia GeForce 9800GTX+ 1gb - 3gb DDR3 RAM - Thermaltake CPU cooler - 1tb HDD 7200rpm So many of the specs, especially the RAM and video cards are pretty outdated. I think the vanquish level 4 specs are pretty much set for everyone, but I'll list them anyway for my personal reference. I'm not sure if the CPU and motherboard will be much of an upgrade however. Honestly, I haven't followed the PC world that much in the last few years so I'm not all caught up. From what i can tell, the i7 is better than the i5. My current rig has an i7, but I'm not sure if that makes it more powerful. Because my i7 is much older and the i5 has a higher clock speed. So I don't know how they compare. As for the mobo, my gigabyte cost me around 300 when I got it, right when it came out. It was fairly mid top of the line back then. The asus mobo is more entry level and cheaper (140), but is many years newer, so I don't know how they would compare either. I'm a little bummed that the asus mobo doesn't support SLI, so if I ever want a second GPU, I'm out of luck unless I replace the mobo. It supports crossfire, but that does me no good without an AMD GPU. But I can't really complain, the price was great and the GPU I got should last me a good long while. The RAM and the GPU are where I'm really excited to see a change. Going from 2 9800GTX's to a 770GTX should be a huge improvement. And the Corsair vengeance RAM will be very welcome! I'm actually planning to double the RAM to 16gb after I get it so it will be even faster. The price for this system is fantastic. It's barely more expensive than building one on my own and it just looks mean! What I think is also cool is that my current rig glows blue and the vanquish glows red. They will both look awesome sitting on opposite sides of my mancave. I just bought the new 15" MacBook Pro for creative projects so I figured I'd go ahead and upgrade to a new gaming PC while I'm at it. I really love having mac osx for mobile use and having windows for a desktop. I think its a good combo. Sorry, mac haters. Please don't hate me! My budget was around $1500 for a gaming PC. Since it's not as necessary for my life as the macbook (which is for work and creative projects), most of my budget had to go to the laptop. But thanks to DS, I found a system powerful for modern games and within my budget. Seriously, this is the best price for what I'm getting from what I could find. Everything for just around 1400, I'm super excited for this system. I don't play hugely intensive games, but I like having the option to. The games I play are star wars the old republic, and some RTS's such as Age of Mythology, Star Wars Empire at War, etc. I know, not very graphically challenging games. Although I will probably be getting BF4 to play on this system and a couple other newer games. I will use the PC for a lot of movies and tv as well. I know this is a long post, so I apologize for telling you my PC life story, just wanted to give a background of my purchase. Like I said, once I get the PC all set up and running, I will post a review with pictures. I'm hoping for the best, from what I've heard digital storm is top notch for building great gaming systems. I'll be looking forward to it! Edited by ben3350 - 28 Oct 2013 at 8:35pm |

Congrats on the new rig and welcome to DS, Ben3350!! The Vanquish L4 is a pretty awesome setup especially for the price. Plus all the cool games it is now coming with!!
This entire setup is lightyears beyond what you are coming from. As far as CPUs go, each gen is about 15-20% faster than the previous. The only real difference between the 4670k i5 & 4770K i7 is that the i7 has 8 threads & 4-cores whereas the i5 is only 4 threads but still a 4-core. For gaming, the majority won't even know the difference. As far as SLI goes, most talk about doing it but never do. If you aren't going to do it right away or within a few months, just wait and a few years down the road pick up whatever is in the same price range then. It will normally offer equal or better performance than 2 older cards... Motherboards make little difference in performance overall - mostly just added features is what sets most of them apart from one another. RAM is also probably not needed as 99% of games don't even require the need for anything more than 8GB. I too use Macs for work and actually haven't used a Windows system until I bought my DS gaming rig which I just got about a month ago. As for stability you just can't beat a Mac. I never thought I'd ever use Windows again but when I wanted to get into serious PC gaming there wasn't really much of an option other than to use Windows. I still find it cumbersome to use but it's a small price to pay for having fun playing games. Can't wait for the pics & review!! Feel free to check out my build progress and my review. |

It's been a while since I've been PC gaming, thanks for telling me about the RAM. I will hold off on that then! I just got the new macbook pro which comes with a core i7 quad core and 16gb RAM. It's kind of funny my laptop will have an i7 and more RAM than my gaming PC. But it won't have that awesome GTX 770! Just got word that my new rig is at Stage 7 and that all testing went well. Cant wait to see this thing in person! Oh and thanks for all the love from the community! |

System came in today!
I've unboxed the system but haven't set it up yet. I've been super busy this week and haven't had the time to get my space ready for the new PC. I'm moving my older PC to a different location and haven't done that yet, but once I do I'm moving in the vanquish to that spot. Should have it all set up by at least friday! Will post photos of the process when it's all set up and running! |

So I just hooked up my new system. Everything works perfectly except for one thing. the red led lighting does not work. When I turned on the system, no lights. Not sure how to fix this.
But otherwise, I love it! Boots up super fast thanks to the SSD and the guts inside are clean and organized well. I'm currently installing all of my games and will be up all night playing. I will also upload some pics tomorrow for my review! Wish the red lights would work, but overall LOVING the system! |

There's a red switch located on the back of the machine so you can turn the light on/off...
