I just ordered my first DS rig, a Bolt level 3 with the Nvidia 670 graphics card.

I need a monitor and my research on this site indicates many people like the Dell Ultrasharps. I am interested in the U2412M. I know there is no HDMI but I see something called a Displayport. Can someone explain what this is and recommend 1 if it is similar to HDMI. I will need a 10 ft cord.

I am open to other monitors, as long as they are under $300 thank you very much.

Here is a link to the wiki entry for displayport.  It will accept a longer cable than a DVI-D.

Depends what you're going to use it for. I use a ASUS VG248QE its great! Very fast for gaming but image quality can be higher.

I am going to use it primarily for gaming. Not interested in a monitor with speakers.

You don't even have to use the monitor speakers you can use your own. Plus its similar to the popular Vh236h but it is LED backlit instead of LCD

Check LG monitors they are really nice. I have the E2742 Monitor which has a really crisp and bright image. Asus and Samsung are also nice monitors. Check the LED IPS technology which increase the resolution image and have more features than the normal LED monitors. Asus and LG have affordable prices. Samsung is a lot more expensive.

U2412 is a pretty solid monitor for the price. However, it does have a heavy anti-glare coating. So it can look a little grainy. Some people don't mind it, some are bothered by it. If you can, try to get to a store and check out some different kinds of monitors and see what things you like. Do you like glossy/matte? What size do you want? What type of panel do you want (IPS vs VA or TN, etc)?

DisplayPort is a little like HDMI, it transmits both a digital video and an audio signal. And the 670 has a DP port too, so you'd be able to use it.

I decided on the Dell Ultrasharp 24 inch.

Anyone recommend a Displayport cable?? There are several types and not sure which is the right one.
