Just asking:
The power supply looks a tad small.
Did you mean to RAID that pair of Raptors by any chance?

Actually Bill is right...as he seems to be in every post from my limited time here.
For the minimal cost to upgrade your power supply, you really should. I found out the hard way 2x in the past as my power supply "couldn't handle it" and caused major damage throughout old systems of mine. |

Hey guys,
The total cost was $3,098. Thanks for the info - I don't want the Raptors "Raided." I do a lot of music writing and music editing, and scoring, on my system, and want all those programs, music data files (not mp3s), plugins etc on a dedicated drive. Probably put all the games, personal files, etc. on the first drive along with the OS. Actually, Robert recommended that I switch to a larger power supply, especially if I am planning on going SLI in the future. Since I'm not, I figured I could get away with a 500W supply. Should I upgrade to a high-quality 520W Corsair PSU, or go up to 600W? Thanks, Chris Edited by thecomplex - 19 Sep 2007 at 4:51pm |

Picking between the Corsair and the Thermaltake is really beyond my pay grade. I'd go with the 600W, but I think I saw Alex recommend the Corsair in some other similar thread.

I would think getting the quad core would be better for the programs that you'll be using in the very near future. |

If you don't plan to go the SLI route, a 500W PS should be fine for now. I would probably get a bigger PS-- around 600W just in case you want to add more devices to your system in the future. Since you plan to use your system for music writing and editing you may want to upgrade your sound card to the X-Fi, it has a better processor and will sound much better.

If you go to upgrade the power supply, the price difference between the Corsair 520W and 620W units is under $35.
Take a look at the efficiency at various system loads on this chart from Corsair's site:
![]() With the 620W version, you should be within that highest efficiency band (looks to be roughly 45% to 55%) if you don't go SLi. If I recall correctly, typical efficiency for the Thermaltake PSU is 70% (that's if I have the right pure power PSU in mind).
Also from the Corsair site, here's a listing of sound levels under various system loads:
![]() Since a load of 310W on the 620W (50%) unit will be a 67% (at that same 310 watts) load on the 520W unit, the 620W should be the quieter of the two for most users not running an SLi configuration.
The PSU itself has recieved glowing praise anywhere I've seen it mentioned. It's not often I see people making much of a PSU.
If you wanted a bit of future proofing by upgrading to a ~600W PSU, I don't see how you could go wrong with the Corsair.

Thanks again everybody:
sundowner - I thought about going for the Q6600 but for the time being settled on the faster dualcore since in terms of gaming I'll mostly be playing Oblivion (I played Daggerfall for like 5 years so I can't imagine I'll get tired of this anytime soon), and since the system will be exponentially faster for audio work than what I'm using now anyway. I imagine I might upgrade the chip down the road.. Commast - I'll be hooking this up to a professional audio interface so I don't really need much out of a consumer sound card. Tyler - thanks for the info - that helps a LOT. Just on the basis of the noise levels and for the sake of future upgradeability I decided to change my order to the 620W Corsair. I've emailed Alex...
