Hey there,

I finally went through with it after reading so many good reviews on the forum and bought my monitor the Dell u2410. I just had a couple questions

1. I have never calibrated anything in my life. Do I need to calibrate this monitor? If so...whats the best way to go about doing it. I have no idea where to even start

2. There is a "gaming" option on the monitor. Does this have anything to do with input lag? What setting do most gamers keep it on

3. I do NOT work with photoshop or any other graphic intensive software. I got this monitor purely for video gaming such as crysis.

Can anyone give me a quick 101 course on IPS monitors I'm a total noob

Thanks

1.don't worry about the calibration, it's factory calibrated.
2. all the game setting does is change the RGB settings slightly, try all the presets out and see which fits you best
3.the monitor is good for gaming, don't worry about that

lol what?
1 its not factory calibrated, the colors are probably nuked and the brightness is maxed. lots of different ways to get monitor calibration programs, some are free, some arent, everest has one, i usually do it by eye.. which takes a long time to get right, try looking online for some that are free and popular

2 a game setting usually sacrifices some color accuracy for a better response time, to let you get smoother fps in games. try it in normal, and if you have any issues like ghosting or wierd fps, try switching it, you may not need to use game

3 that will make calibrating the colors easier, you may even like the factory settings since they are color nuked and super bright.. they probably arent 100% correct, but if it looks "right" is up to you

Any software calibration you can recommend? I don't mind spending a few extra bucks for something good

Okay thanks...

Also,

I noticed my refresh rate is set to 60hz but this monitor can do 75hz. I am using a Radeon 5870 and when I go into CC and try to set my refresh rate to 75 it drops my resolution and won't work.

Anyone know why this is?

same with my monitor, lg w2340.. i believe that the 75hz refresh is 1280x and lower, another peice of marketing bullsh*t

its more important that you think the color looks good than it being "right" so play with it on your own a little before you pay for anything

I too am most likely getting the U2410 once a good sale starts again.  So, I am interested to hear if you have any of the tinting problems commonly reported.

Regarding calibration:  I use something like this for my TVs and projector.  It would work for a monitor as well if you aren't going for perfection:

Oh ATI drivers,

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death,
So please die in a fire, with no further adieus.

yea its factory tuned to not look rediculous, but if you want it tuned well and/or properly it needs to be adjusted to fit your eyes and your surroundings

I don't have the tinting problem that some people are complaining about. I was really worried that I would but I just ordered mine new from amazon and so far so good.

That's good news.  That monitor is supposed to be awesome with no tinting problems.

I didn't have any tinting problems with my U2410.  The only thing I had to do was lower the brightness, lol..it almost blinded me when I turned it on.
