Hey guys, I got a D-Link wireless router to go with my DS rig and everything's been working fine except for one thing: LAG
Every ~2 minutes I get horrible lag spikes! If I'm just surfing the internet, then it'll make pages take forever to load until the lag goes away, and when I'm playing games like TF2 and CS:S, it'll just freeze... then 2 seconds later speed up to where I should have been. It's getting really really annoying (not to mention causing a lot of deaths lol) so I've been asking around and people on CS:S are saying that I'm experiencing "packet loss" due to my wireless router. They said that if I simply physically connect my computer to my router (get a wired connection), it'll fix the problem. Now, the reason why I got a wireless router in the first place is because a wired connection will be a pain in the to set up. But if it will fix the problem, it'd be worth it So I guess my question is, will getting a wired connection from my router to my PC fix the lag spikes that I'm getting?Edited by Nomad - 09 Apr 2008 at 1:38pm |

This is a not well-known Vista phenomenon and the first thing to try is a little piece of shareware called Vista Antilag. Some Danish geek has figured a way to nullify the recurring 60 second lag spike when connected to wireless routers or adapters. This 'bout drove me mad before I found it but it's been smooth sailing since. Just ask Duke how pwned he gets by me (and vice versa) on the TF2 servers. I posted a link before but I'm at work now and can't find it. google is your buddy.
Good luck, let us know how you make out.

Bah, Bfrank likes to whore it up with his team medic so my hits don't hurt him.
Although I like the convenience (for general use), I'm not too fond of wireless connectivity myself. It's never solid. I will never play online over a wireless connection, I just don't trust it, for the same reason of this post.
How many bars are you getting on your wireless connection? I know my laptop at home will cut in and out sometimes at 3 bars out of 5 (windows reports this as a "good" connection). I also notice that the weather plays a role too. Sometimes on cloudy days the signal will be low. How far away are you from your router? Try re-locating the router, move it somewhere higher. You can also try changing the wireless channel, sometimes that helps. Also microwaves and cordless telephones can also interfere with wireless signals so keep the router away from those. Other than that, it could just be the Vista Phenomenon problem that Bfrank mentions. |

Yeah I always stay Wired on my Main Rig; and always have; actually I bought the D-Link Router that is certified for Vista and it is awesome; great Priority of Packets; and I didnt even have to set it up; after reading all the ins and out of the router setup itself; I went into the setting and the router took it upon itself to organize which Online Games, VOIP etc get priority. Even though it's a Wireless Router I have it wired; this way if anyone suffers any lag its the other Rigs int he house or the VOIP; but never my Rig; so far no one has had a problem and Xbox is on at least 8-10 hrs a day as well as 2 laptops and 2 VOIP phone lines; all seem to be lag free.
One thing I did buy on my Old computer is the Hawking Booster when I was having some Lag Issues on my VOIP; it actually worked really well. So you can always buy one of those as a last resort if you have too.

You need to go to Linksys website and read the forums about the D-Link Router. You either love it, or you hate it. I would also always stay wired to the main source. |

Hey guys! Thanks for the help!
Well I tried the Vista Anti-lag program, but unfortunately, I still got the lag spikes every 60 or so seconds. So I set up a temporary wired connection and everything's been working perfectly so far! I think I'm just gonna go ahead and stick with the wired connection. |

Sorry that didn't work for you, but at least you had an option to go
wired. I'm renting right now, my office is on the second floor, and
Comcast won't install any new service above ground level - idiots and
ladders don't mix apparently. So my options were either to go
wireless, run a 100' of coax down the hallway, or say goodbye to my
security deposit and start drilling holes in the walls. I put up with
the lag for a while but tired of dying in BF2 in the middle of a
one-on-one shootout when I'd lag out and come back to a prone lump
yelling "medic, medic." I have a linksys wireless draft-N router and
adapter which may be the difference in Anti-Lag working or not.
Oh well, happy lag-free frag-fest to you... Bf2m |

Bfrank; Ill check out my Hawking Booster and see if it can be set up wireless as well; because if it can you can have it; Im not using it anymore anyway. Go on the Hawking site too and see if works wireless;; it has an antenna on it. But normally you hook it up between the computer and the router; but I could see it being used wirelss. Go to their website and chek; its just called the Hawking Booster.
