I am thinking of setting up a LAN with my upcoming DS system with my current computer. This will be my first LAN setup. If I want to just LAN my two computers and keep only one hooked up to the internet, do I need a router?

If I want to hook up both to internet and share a printer, I do know I will need a router/switch like setup...correct?

Any suggestions as to a good router and setup cables?

thx

It is probably possible to directly connect your two computers together with just an Ethernet cable. Does your new computer have a motherboard with 2 Ethernet ports? In any event, I still wouldn't recommend this solution.

Combination Router/Switches are dirt cheap and provide hardware based firewall protection that dramatically increases the security of your computer(s) connected to the Internet.

Getting OS and driver updates is a pain for computers that aren't connected to the Internet , and there's this nasty trend of requiring Internet access to register programs when they are installed. Of course there's this Windows based "Internet Sharing" feature, but....

Just as important a router will give you a lot of expansion potential. Years ago, I started out with just two machines connected directly by coax Ethernet cable. It didn't take long to out grow that. Now there are 7 working computers and two wireless routers in the house.

Unless you have a "network ready" printer, it is going to remain attached to one of the PCs and isn't really a factor in the decision. If it is network ready then for sure you want a router so the printer is always accessable.

Personally, I like Netgear routers, switches, and NICs, but just about any brand will do the trick.

With XP and Vista based computers and modern routers, home LANs are not difficult to set up.
