I have no intention on doing this really but am very curious if any high end overclockers on this forum like Justin.Kerr or anyone else does this. I have been reading a lot of mixed feelings on this subject as to if this helps or not. I read on Noctua's page that they actually leave a slightly machined surface because they feel this works better with the modern thermal pastes.
Any strong opinions on this issue?

I have lapped 10-12 setups, and know of a lot of people that have done it to.
Yes if the CPU cooler has a solid copper plate, then lapping will help. How much? well that varies greatly, every cooler will be different and so will every chip, so some will mate up better than others, the ones that do not mate up very well will see the largest gain in lapping. 10C lower temps can happen, but usually 2C-4C is what to expect for most higher clocked setups.
Mirrored polish on both, completely flat on both is best, but it takes some elbow grease. lol
This is a pretty common practice, and no big deal, like direct die cooling now thats for the pros. lol

Thanks for the reply. I have watched a few video's of people doing this and I was wondering if it actually paid off or not. Some people seem to swear by it and other think it's really dumb to do. You are confirming what I thought; that it'll give mild results.
now curious and researching direct die cooling lol..

Peltier is interesting. I like how it works but it doesn't have a middle ground, it's either dangerously cold (condensation) or not strong enough at all. If a computer ran the same speed, all the time, it makes sense. But most computers don't. Personally I'd rather see peltier used on cooling solar cells. At least that's just what I'd do with it anyway.

I think the CM v10 usues Peltier cooling.
I always wondered if someone got one of those portable AC's (the ones you don't need to put in your window). And then got ducting to all your fan intakes if it were to make any real difference.
