Budget:
deep, deep pockets, LOL! any really Expectations: I currently have an XPS 17. I want a laptop that's going to last. I'm not a hardcore gamer and would like a desktop, but lifestyle insists I have a laptop. Usage: Use Office, play mmorpgs like Guild wars 2, wow, diablo 3, world of tanks, maybe elder scrolls online Special Needs: I do need lots of storage for photos and photo editing, plus music and audio book collection Saved Ticket #: [Please Type Here] Specifications: I'm looking at the carbine cause I really want the 17" I just want to know what I need and not spend more than I have to. I want a laptop that's going to last and I don't have to worry about the break downs. My question with the small SSD drives is what do you do, just mostly use it for your OS and install games, itunes, etc on the large hard drive? I currently have 2 500gb drives and am using about half of that, but filling it more every day. I take a lot of large photos too with a 24mp camera so the files are large. I store them elsewhere when they start to take up too much room plus I always have some sort of backup in place just in case. Should I get 16 or 32mb of ram? Faster is always better and I'm always thinking about what I'll need in a few years, but really how long will a laptop last me and what's the smartest way to go financially? Get a cheaper model that works now and buy new every 3 years or get top shelf and it will last 5 or 6 years? I really don't know. Help. |

Really? No opinions? Level 2 to Level 4? No opinions on hard drives, ram, or longevity?

Seeing that you play Guild Wars 2, I have realized that the game is optimized more for the CPU being that i have a i7 920 and a GTX 680 graphics card but yet still get average framerates.
The level 2 is good if you dont need a lot of files on the SSD and has a 750GB HDD for all your video/photo/audio files. The level 3 has a better CPU and a bigger SSD if want to install Adobe Photoshop, etc on it for faster performance. The HDD is what bottlenecks a lot of programs. So it really comes down to if you want to put more programs on your SSD, that is something that would be worth investing in if you use a lot of the Creative Suite. |

Thank you. So, stupid question coming. If I go for level 2 with the small SSD, do you pretty much just use it for the OS and install everything on the HDD? It wouldn't take long to swamp that small of an SSD, but if you just used it for the OS it would speed things up, right?

Yeah that should be fine. But coming from someone who has Photoshop and premiere pro installed on a SSD, the load times are insanely fast. Then again, installing programs on the HDD is perfectly fine as well, it might just take a little bit longer to load.
If you use it just for OS, the boot times and simple tasks will be much faster! just make sure all your programs are installed to the HDD so the SSD doesnt get flooded. |
