Hello to all the DS minions and Bosses.
I'm looking to buy a laptop for a very good friend of mine and need some help with configs. He is a high school teacher and needs the computer mobile for light documents/grades and what not, otherwise i would get a desktop model which would probably be cheaper for his wants/needs. The most he will do with the laptop is play Skyrim sometime in the future and the previous Elder Scrolls games so i wanted to get one that would be adequate to play that game and make the best use of the graphics capabilities (no need to go overboard like seeing the shadow of a bead of sweat rolling down a face and the reflection of the scenery in same). The other uses wouldn't need very much processing power at all. Some occasional internet/email usage and Word documents and files. Budget is as low as possible of course What CPU minimum should i get and what GPU minimum should i get? I've decided to purchase from DS mostly because of the customer service i've been reading about. My friend is not very computer savvy and will need the tech support from time to time and English is his only fluent language (it's actually what he teaches.) lol Also the system will be tested for problems and worked out before shipping and hopefully will not have all the unnecessary spamware they put on all those big box comps. Thanks for all the help and i look forward to the purchase. |

The x15 laptop has the option of the amd 6990m video card wich is amd's highest end mobile card and very good. whatever parts you chouse id spring the extra $148 for that. everything else can be upgraded later (wifi card, ram, hard drive even CPU) but the mobile card is fairly permanent as most of them are not upgradable. the above graphics card will be 65-85% faster than most everything you can get in that 15 inch size. There is only one option to get slightly better and that (gtx580m isover $300 more than the amd 6990m for about 5% higher performance as for cpu id recomend getting at least thhe 2670qm its a good chip and for light gaming/entertainment and grading documents it will be more than fine.. everything sronger will be tossing money away for his needs.
also upgrade your wifi card to anything better than the wifi that comes with the notebook. they are almost always the most pitifull and lag ridden wifi card. a great place for you to read about notbooks is notebookreviews.com the forums there most laptop resellers have a presence there and then look at notebookcheck.com wich will show the actual in game FPS of every mobile and desktop gpu thats currenly available on various settings. on notebook reviews forums you will want to look in the clevo/sager lounges because the clevo barebones laptops are what digital storm puts together Good luck on your future shopping

Thanks for the Info covfam. I think it helped more than confused
![]() So the 2670qm paired with the 6990m will be able to play Skyrim on high to ultimate settings? That wont be overworking the CPU will it? Is it worth it too upgrade the 8gig ram from 1333 to 1600 for $35? Will it be noticeable in game play or is 8gig plenty of ram no matter what the speed is anyway? here is what i was thinking of getting Cost $1832.00 Chassis Model: Digital Storm x17 Laptop (Model: 8170) Display: 17.3 Inch (16:9) (Resolution: 1920 x 1080) (Glossy Surface) LED-Backlit Display Processor: Intel Core i7 2670QM (2.2 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.1Ghz) (Quad Core) (6MB Cache) Thermal Compound: Premium IC Diamond CPU and GPU Thermal Compound (Reduces Thermal & Laptop Noise) Memory: 8GB DDR3 1333MHz Primary Hard Drive: Intel 80GB SSD (320 Series) (SATA 3Gb/s) Secondary Hard Drive: - No Thanks Optical Drive: DVD/CD 8x Multi-Drive (Writes and Reads DVDs, CDs) Wireless Card: Intel Advanced-N 6230 Wireless LAN Module Video Card(s): AMD Radeon HD 6990M 2GB Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Warranty Plan: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty |

from what i understand and i may be wrong but on a laptop you should never need more than 8 gigs of ram for gaming. i only have 16 gigs on mine because my wife does alot of photo shopping and video editing and they use as much ram as you can give them. if you decide on more than eight gigs make sure you get 16.. because if you get 12 gigs from what i understand it will treat your ram as single channel instead of dual channel with will reduce your performance a lil bit.
And yes the 2670qm will do more than fine for your gaming the only real limitation is that the high end mobile cards are only about as strong as the higher mainstream desktop cards NOT the entheusiast card that they share the same name with. According to Notebookcheck.com the lesser card amd 6970m gets 31fps with ultra settings with 1920x1080 with 8x AA 16xAF in another high end game crysis 2 it gets the same FPS on ultra settings and the stronger 6990m gets 35fps on ultra and in deus x 2 it gets 50FPS on ultra settings. btw you have an SSD listed but no secondary storage drive. that 80gigs will fill up REALLY fast. :) so you really wont get much better unless you get a dual video card laptop.

that was what i thought about the 8gigs of ram being plenty for any game but will it be a noticeable difference going from 1333mhz to 1600mhz? if it's only going to give 1 more fps i dont think it's worth the price.
That 80gig SSD will last him a lot longer than you would think and a second one can be put in later when the prices come down. It should help boost his performance with everything and from my understanding a lot less likely to have failures. |

Ram speed will make no difference if 1 fps.
win7 takes 20GB and most games are getting pretty big, most people with 80GB for os/apps/games have ran out of room, but its up to you. |

Well considering he is working with a 60 gig hard drive right now and still has 12 gigs available and the laptop is 7 years old now i think it he will be fine. And of course a second or external hdd can always be added later if he needs more room.
i was trying to find out if the different Ram speeds will make much difference in game play and if so how much? Will it increase the fps or would it just be used in other multitasking applications? |

it wont make a signifigant difference. from what ive read you have to go from 1333 to 2,000 ram to really notice the difference.. but the 2670qm doesnt recognize anything past 1333 you have to go to the 2760qm to get 1600mhz support

Even if you go from 1333 to 2000mhz the speed makes no or very little difference sometime it even hurts.
If you know 80GB is enough then go for it. remember ram amount = multi tasking ram speed = speed, which makes very little difference if any. |
