Looking to get a good laptop for school/games. I think this will fit most everything I need but wasn't to sure if the Quad core or the Hybrid Hard Drive are worth it.

What games are you going to play?
Do you like having a glossy screen because there is an option for a matte screen? |

I would go for the x15 laptop instead with a GTX 560m for Starcraft 2 and Skyrim. It has better cooling than the xm17.

This is the x15 gaming laptop with a GTX 560m. The xm15 and xm17 comes with either a GT 540m or a GT 555m. |

555m will give you significantly better battery life (Around 5 hours max), 560M will possibly give you better performance at the cost of battery life (I'd say around 3 hours max). Given that this is a laptop and your price range is stated $1200 range, I'm assuming this won't be dedicated to desktop work. I'd personally go with a 555M to keep it true to being a laptop.
Additionally, given that you say you'll be using it for school, I'd advise the XM15 over the XM17 because of size. For CPU, get the 2720QM, the 2630 isn't HT I believe. As for networking, I've seen tests that show the Killer NIC is actually better than most wireless NICs. Again, I'm in complete agreement that Killer WIRED NICs are a waste of money, but the wireless ones appear to show promise. If you're doing some wireless gaming, get the Killer NIC if you can fit it into your budget. My take: Click - Config : 589416 Edited by ablahblah - 23 Aug 2011 at 4:40pm |

The 2630 has Hyper threading, and with that it will be more in my budget, do you think the 2720 is still worth it considering the 2630 has HT?

Hybrid drive isn't all that it's hyped to be when it comes to practical performance.
On the note of processors, feel free to get the 2630QM. I confused it for the 2620M which has 2 cores HT. The 2630 lacks virtualization though, if you ever wanted to use Windows XP Mode or vmware. |
