After digging deeper into the DS website for gaming laptops, I've customized 2 configurations and I'm confused because the second configuration seems much more superior for less than $100 more.  Any opinions, advice, etc?  Pros, cons to each to help me decide which to buy?

DS x17   -  $2836

-Intel Core i7 2820QM (2.3 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.4Ghz) (Quad Core) (8MB Cache)
-Premium IC Diamond CPU and GPU Thermal Compound
12GB DDR3 1600MHz
-500GB Hybrid 7200RPM with 4GB SSD (SATA 3Gb/s)
-Blu-Ray Player (Blu-Ray 6x) & DVD/CD Writer
-Bigfoot Networks Killer Wireless-N 1102
-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M 2GB

DS x17E  -  $2916

-Intel Core i7 970 (3.2 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.46Ghz) (Six Core) (12MB Cache)
-Premium IC Diamond CPU and GPU Thermal Compound
-12GB DDR3 1066MHz
-500GB Hybrid 7200RPM with 4GB SSD (SATA 3Gb/s)
-Blu-Ray Player (Blu-Ray 6x) & DVD/CD Writer
-Bigfoot Networks Killer Wireless-N 1102
-2x SLI (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB)
-Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium

I talked to one guy at work and he said the second configuration will be more prone to overheating than the first.

I just want to be sure before dishing out almost $3000 which will work best for me.

I would go for the x17, so you would get a more battery life than the x17e, because you get Nvidia Optimus.

The x17e has terrible battery life because it's designed to be plugged in. The battery life is like less than an hour on idle (doing nothing) and less than 45 minutes playing a game.

Unlicensedhitman,

What kind of battery life are you getting with your xm15?

With my 1st generation Intel Core i5, I get about 3 to 4 hours with an Intel SSD.

With the 2nd generation Intel Core i5 (may included the Core i7), people can get 3 to 5 hours with an Intel SSD.

I have an xm17 with a 2630qm and a 540m that works great. However, it seems you're looking for a desktop replacement Laptop, in which case I'd recommend your first setup if you're getting it for gaming (although I'd recommend just using 8gb of RAM as 12 could bottleneck). If you want to use this for 3D rendering and high demanding video editing I'd go with the second.

I've decided to go with the first configuration because I knew there was a catch on the second one.  I don't want such short battery life.
