Good morning,
My girlfriend just started school this week at San Jose State. She's an animation major and was instructed to purchase a laptop. I assume she will be running 3D Studio, Maya, and possibly Toonboom. Since I haven't have any recent experience with these programs (I haven't used either since they were newish), I figured I'd ask you guys what's up. According to the program recommendations I need a card with at least 1GB of ram which is easy to do these days. I don't know a whole lot about the Quadro cards, but from what I understand they're supposed to be the best for that sort of stuff.
I guess my question is this:
Will even a more standard video card with 1 GB of ram on it be able to handle these programs without a hitch or do I need to invest in something beefier? She might be doing some light gaming in between classes on the machine and I have a few desktop machines at home, so this laptop will be almost strictly for use in her class.
Why the teacher is making students buy laptops for this is beyond me, I figured the school would have adequate machines for students to use. Yay for California budget cuts I guess?
Anyway, thanks in advance. Edited by Aroberts0820 - 28 Jan 2011 at 1:06pm |

Those apps need more ram on the system itself and not the gpu, I mean the gpu does need some vram, I believe you want it to be at 1GB of vram or higher, but for the apps themselves you gonna need like more then 6GB system ram form what I understand, but I'm not expert on them.

I'm planning on getting her something with an i7 and 8gb of RAM. I'm trying to shoot for a laptop that has the capability of reaching 1920x1080, even if she doesn't have it that high she has the ability to have the higher resolution to give her more space to work with. The product recommendations same a dedicated graphics card with at least 1gb of RAM, I just didn't know if the actual GPU mattered. Will a low-end ATI card be able to handle Maya and 3DS just as well as a 480m?

Go with nvidia. She will be fine with a geforce card. I have over five years experience in film vfx and animation and I use geforce cards in my home pc's. You will still be better off getting the best geforce you can afford for maya.
