Hey guys,
I'm looking at configuring a laptop for myself and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on processors for me. I am interested in an i7-740QM processor-based system. At least I was until I was looking at Intel's website which showed a quick comparison between some i7 chips.
Here is the chart:
I noticed that the processor I was interested in doesn't have a 'turbo' clock speed. Does anyone know if this processor doesn't support that or if it was merely omitted. I will be doing some light gaming on this laptop and know that a faster clock speed will do a lot more for me than extra cores. Would I be better off looking at an i5-460M based system which has a 2.53Ghz processor clock?
Thanks in advance.

I'm not great with laptop processors, but both 740qm and 460m both support turbo from what I understand.
Tho processor speed is important, its been shown that quad core out performs dual core a good deal. in this case you are getting more L2 and L3 cache, double the 540m. with turbo on both, from what I understand, the i7 will be at 2.9Ghz and the i5 at 3.0Ghz, that difference is too small to notice. If your are thinking 470qm, I think the 720qm would be better, cost less, and the difference between the 720 and 740 is very little. I have not seen benchmarks, but if the i5 gives you 60 fps or more in the games you want to play with a good gpu, then go with the i5, if you are going to be lot of tasks and etc, then go with the i7. My biggest advice is if you are going to get a laptop, make sure you get warranty for it, for as long as you want it running. it breaks down in 2 years, and you have no warranty, then you are left buying a new laptop.
