Well, it's finally time to build my "dream computer" for some happy days of gaming without worrying about whether my computer "can handle this game".
My budget is about 4G.  
I've got a pretty good handle on where I'm heading to make this as "future proof" as much as possible LOL. I will ask your opinions on that in a later post.
...Couple of things I could use some advice on.  
1.  What do think about the future of 3D gaming--just a passing fad or something
     to consider for this build? One thing I learned was it takes some real 
     "horsepower" to run a 3D game on a 3D ready monitor, and I can't see how 
     game publishes would want to invest in a game that would require a 
     computer that the majority of players either don't have or can't afford.
2. Right now I am leaning towards 2 580's/SLI and a i7 980, but I notice that DS
    has a special on 975's. Since the 975's are discontinued would these be
    "leftovers" that couldn't pass overclocking tests?  Please, I AM NOT
    ACCUSING GS OF DOING ANYTHING DISHONEST OR UNETHICAL--I have
   researched computer builders and over & over again, and GS is looking like one
   of the best, and as of now they are my choice.
3. I am choosing the 1500 watt power supply. Overkill??  Maybe, but "future" is
   the key word.  I started out with a 750W OEM and now have a 650 Thermaltake
   designed for auxillary bay mount for my 2 285 SLI !
  Ok this is getting way to wordy...More question later.  I sure would  appreciate 
  some input and your thought.

They're just leftovers because they've never sold well. You don't want a 975, they are nothing like a 980X. A 980X is a hexa-core, a 975 is just a glorified and extremely overpriced quad-core. A 975 comes factory overclocked and with an unlocked multiplier for ease of overclocking (separately from RAM) yet surprise surprise overclock any normal quad-core (920, 930, 940, 950) to the same speed and they perform almost exactly identical. Not worth the extra hundreds of dollars at all.

I would not consider the 980X for a gaming machine either, there are extremely few applications that can benefit from the extra cores/threads, and almost none of those are games. You can count the number of games that can utilize 12 threads on a couple fingers, and I don't recall any of them being hard to max or CPU bound anyway. The GPU(s) will always be the overwhelming driving power when it comes to gaming FPS.

Yeah...you're right.  (Besides that, I did a typo-it is the 965 on special..that makes it even worse!)  This configuring is a strange thing for me...some nights I sit down and ..."gotta get the bestest and fastest" then the next night reality sets in and (I'm learning..!...) its "I REALLY don't need it THAT bestest and fastest..."
Thanks.  I'm still wondering about 3D..after reading some reviews I was amazed at the framerates of games running 3D on a 120htz 1080p 23" monitor at
1680X1050 and above--it seems 3D will bring a darn good machine to its knees...
