Ok, current config at $1906 and that includes shipping.

Advice welcome!

484782 config number
Budget is $1900
Expectations are to play games like dragon age 2, civ 5, etc...
Usage is to play games
Special needs are to not overheat, not crash, not freeze up :)
Unlikely to ever use two gpu's

Case: - Cooler Master HAF 932                                 Bigger than I need but great reviews on cooling

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz                             I play games and never multitask

Motherboard: ASUS P8P67                                         Performs equally to pro but I do not need the extra features

Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz DS                              4 would be enough but getting 8 just in case.

PSU: 750W Corsair TX                                                Should be good for this config

Hard Drive:  1x 500GB                                               Never used 400 on current pc even with many games installed

Optical Drive 1: 24x                                                   Basic one

Video Card: 1x ATI Radeon HD 6970 2GB                 I like to use 2560x1600 whenever possible

Extreme Cooling:  Noctua NH-U12P                          Got great reviews

FREE: Overclock the CPU                                           2500k is overclock friendly

Windows  7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition)             Bill Gates needs his cash

Keyboard and Mouse                                                Old keyboard and mouse in rough shape

I would get the 2600K CPU, many of the new games use 6 threads, that would leave 2 left over for background apps while gaming.

I would get the 1Tb HDD, faster than the 500Gb by a good margin, and you don't want to fill a hard drive up over 60-70% performance starts takes a huge hit after around the 50% mark

Thanks for the tip on hard drives. I did not know that. Fortunately the cost for a 1tb is very low.

The cpu upgrade is more costly though. That might be difficult.

I read an article that said gpu's eat your ram, and they advised more than 4gb ram...any thoughts on that?

GPU's eat RAM?  nope.  gaming wise, more than 4Gb of RAM will not help one single bit

Good to know. I have had some trouble getting a definative answer to the following: "Is 8 ram of any real value over 4 ram when all you do is play games?"

amount of ram = more multi tasking.

so if you are runing one game at a time, 4GB is more then enough, if you are running multiple things at a time then you may need more ram, depending, ram/hdd/gpu are all things you can add/upgrade later easily.

still under your budget, but feel free to change teh hdd and etc back to whatever you want:

Yes, I have one of those 30" Dells I bought about two years ago when I had extra money laying around. Not so much free cash right now!

Generally I will try out a game on 2560x1600 and lower it if I have to.

Thanks for the config assistance by the way.

So the haf 932 is overkill?

Well its a little bigger and we normally recommend those to people who what to add stuff to their pc, if you are not going go sli IMO the 922 should do a great job, of course the 932 has 3 large fan vs the 2 large fan of the 922, but you can add the third large fan to the 922.
