Just getting people's opinion on the above. I have a new custom built PC almost on the way... My old PC I would let go into sleep mode.

Thanks

No sleep mode, ever. No Hibernate, either. Either shut it off or leave it running (I'm 50-50 either way. Probably leave a bit more to off, than running but it depends on the day and the task.)

Sleep and/or Hibernate cause more problems than the issues they were invented to prevent.

All of my prior desktop PC, I left running continuously unless I was going to be gone for more than a day, or it had a problem that could best be solved by a reboot. The hibernate mode was problematic. However the hibernate (sleep) mode works fine now.

Right now the turn off after every use has 70% of the replies. I am surprised, because the off on cycle is probably harder on components than just leaving it on all of the time. How often does a light blub blow other than when you turn it on?

I believe I explained this more in-depth in a post on this topic the last time this came up, but I haven't personally had any issues with Sleep for a long time. Hibernation never worked well for me and so I avoided that, but Sleep hasn't been an issue for me since at least Windows 8, maybe 7, but I'm not entirely sure. All that said, I'm still generally "shut it off" or "go sleep sleeps" when it's not going to be used for ~2+ hours, especially since the rise of SSDs.

I am the sole vote for leaving on. I used to turn it off every night but lately it was taking some work to turn it on so I decided to leave it on and I guess I had read Tidgxor's write up about leaving on if getting in years so... Mine is close to 6. No issues at all. Always concerned it will sprout a leak!
That said, I will turn off if I'm going to be away for more than a day.

Haven't used sleep in a long time. Just let the monitors go to sleep.

How many programs do you have running at startup?

I try to remember to shut down all programs but sometimes I have Outlook and Edge running.

Five. That's bonafide programs, of course there are far more Services than that but even then I've pruned those pretty heftily.

I've been always on for over 10 years. My original DS went 8 1/2 years without a single failure, and it never slept. 2 1/2 years on this one, but I may let it sleep and see what happens, per Tidgxor.
