Welcome to DS. That system seems strong enough for your intended use but I am not good at configuring. I can tell you that the Storage Set 1 should be an Nvme drive and not SATA. It will load everything you have on it much faster. Others will come by with more intelligent and reasoned ideas for your intended uses. Enjoy.

It seems you're on a tight budget, so I think you can get some decent performance here. The Seagate 500GB Firecuda is a no-brainer at $21. It's a PCIe generation 4 part supported by AMD motherboards, and it's 5 times faster than the DS SATA SSD.
Any way you can stretch to $1853 total? 12 cores would be so much better for your workload, and 32 GB of Ram would be a great help, also. Adding the dual fan all-in-one CPU cooler that the Ryzen 3900X requires gets you over $2000 where you get a $200 discount that about pays for your CPU. This is it: Config ID 3460097 (The price gets a $200 discount at check-out) To see it, go to "Load Config" upper right on the main page, and load just the number into the window. I'm not selling you, I'm just a customer like you, and if you can't squeeze out the extra dollars, it's cool. You'll get the job done with what you list plus the Firecuda. But ohhh, boy, that $1853 rig would kick butt! |

I appreciate the commentary. I decided to go with the suggested upgrade - seems like quite a good deal. Now I just have to figure out how to transfer my files and programs to the new computer!

It's a pleasure. I thought you might be able to take advantage of such a superb upgrade in power! Stretching a little to get to that discount can really make a difference. In this case it bought you 4 more cores, and your work is all about cores.
Your easiest option for transfers is an external SSD. If you can get your hands on a USB 3.1 capable drive, you can make short work of it. A USB 3.0 will transfer around 700 MB a second. Easier still is just to bring over the old drive if possible. I'm pretty sure you are going to love your new rig and how productive you can be. |

I am really looking forward to editing with such power. Maybe I will even try out some games - any suggestions?

If you have any penchant for fantasy, The Witcher 3 is one of the best games ever made for role-playing a hero. Also, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout games allow you to create and role play your own character from the ground up.
For kingdom building coupled with strategic and tactical combat between armies that you manage in real time, Total War titles can be very challenging. There is a vast collection of first person combat games if that has appeal. they can be very intense and challenging, but can be played on easy difficulty and up. They tend to be a short collection of scenarios to overcome. The games universe is vast, and you can find just about anything for any taste, including simple pastimes. Google is your friend. Steam is the most popular source for simply downloading games to your computer, but there are others. Enjoy! Edited by Cretae - 14 Oct 2020 at 3:01pm |
