Hey folks!! Long time since I've been here, had problems with my original build, shipped it back and upgraded a few things now I've got it back and it's incredible. I'll post a review eventually, we've been searching for a house. You long timers may remember we live on a flood plain, hopefully it won't be that way for long. We've got a house in the works.
Anyway, I've got the stage 4 L/C'ing and I want to put in something to keep track of it. Like this thing: http://www.xoxide.com/thermaltake-flowtx-flowmeter-wi.html
D/S said they don't do third party stuff or something like that so now I need some info. What are the i.d. and o.d. of my tubing? What is my waterblock? I think its a Swiftech XT. I was told there's distilled water in my cooling system. So, is there a growth inhibitor in there too or should I add something? Who made that radiator? There aren't any names or marks on it.
![]() So, there's a picture of the lines but it's not very close, I can take another if need be. Oh, also I opted for the 4 Zalman fans on the side panel but I'm wondering if the updated fan that Cooler Master sells for the Haf 932 side is better for air flow. The whirrrr those 7 Zalmans make gets a little annoying when my headphones aren't on.

radiator looks like a HW labs stealth 240.
water block is indeed a XT
tubing? hard to tell from the picture, they use to use 3/8" but the water block they have it in 1/2" compression setup, because 3/8" compression you do not have to rotate the input. there is also 7/16" hose.. 1.025" outside diameter on a 1/2" compression fitting.. if that helps. lol hopefully a DS person will chime in on the hose.
I did not know that DS used distilled water for coolant, if they did, then yes there needs to be an additive, or chunk of silver in the loop, I certainly would think that they are not running pure distilled.

Yeah, the tubing is exxxxtremely thick, it doesn't even want to be moved. So I'd say you're probably right at 3/8 by 1". I will wait to see if a D/S person answers.
No, I don't think they do use distilled water. My first setup was definitly glycol based but all they offer is UV reactive and I told them I don't want that stuff. So, when it arrived I called and asked what's in there? Tech support looked at my order and said, distilled water. I don't see any silver and I don't know where to get one but someone recently gave me a link for a water killer bomb, so I can get that if I need to.
Hey, as long as I've got your infinite knowledge on hand. I'll have to flash the bios to the new 44 if I want to run the hex core when it comes out right? Also, what do you think of that flow meter, is it worth the trouble? Would I know if the pump quit and my headphones were blasting? Edited by BriSleep - 26 Feb 2010 at 10:38pm |

My guess is the tubing is 7/16" or 1/2" I.D., it is so hard to tell with the picture, the water block, they have it setup for the big compression fittings, so it would not make sense to set the water block up for big tubing and use 3/8" but it is possible. lol
Make sure that you have just pure distilled first, and don't add any crap to the loop, you can get a 8" or 12" chunk of silver here https://www.jab-tech.com/Antimicrobial-Silver-Strip-pr-4530.html
pretty cheap, some even put a $19.00 ingot in the res. lol
Bios, yes you will need to update it to run a hexacore, but wait till you get the hexacore, because there will be a new BIOS by then.
Flow meter, not sometihng I would ever use, restrictive, and more stuff to have problems with.

Thanks Justin, esp for the link. So I guess I have to wait for an answer from D/S to find out if there's anti-microbial in there eh?
You're not the only one to say that thing is not worth it. So what does a water cooler do? Just don't worry about it and hope that the thermal breaker will stop the proc before it overheats? I'm not too sure about that issue as the reason I did the re-build was my Vreg was cooking off and D/S said it should be but Evga said send it back.

can you see the water flowing in your res?
The system will shut down if the CPU gets too hot.
Pumps usually last 5+ years so I would not worry about it.
Both my wife and I have jobs that allow us to work out of our respective home offices, and we do all our work on PC's that are water cooled, so our income is reliant on the PC's working, so that shows how confident, or stupid we are in the pumps ability to keep on a chugging along. we also only run them when we need them, so nights, and days off they do not run. That will make the pumps last a lot longer than 24/7 running, same with all the parts .

Ok, see of all the questions I've asked on other boards and other people on the phone, even on OCN.net's watercooling board no one has ever said anything like this. So, never having water before I had a legit concern. I know one guy in Australia that runs his 24/7 and has a swiftech pump but it's only a year old.
No, I can't see the water in the res moving, the old setup had a micro-res and it had the little cross baffle in it so you could see the fluid slosh. Now They put in a 5.25" bay reservoir by XS/PC and the pump is under it and the return is right above the pump, so, no sloshing it has a nice LED in the back to light up the juice but...... Never mind that, the LED just died as I was writing. There were a bunch of things wired wrong when I got the re-build but I fixed them, guess I'll have to check that out.
I looked at other reservoirs but I didn't see anything I'd want to use. I've got your encouraging words now so I don't think it'll bother me now. I do need to find out if there's something in the distilled water though.
Oh, I never run 24/7 never saw the point, I'm not a server and I can't afford that kind of electric bill. I'd rather spend the money modding my system. Like saving for the nebulous Fermi cards. HA!! I have $1000- in cash, think that'll cover it?
Thanks for the help Justin, I appreciate it! I'll work on my arrival pics and get a review up here before we move. Tomorrow I have a swarm of black ants that are invading the trailer to murder though. Edited by BriSleep - 26 Feb 2010 at 11:42pm |
