I wonder if upgrading from (free) UPS Ground to ($90) Three Day Air might be a wise plan. I dont like the idea of my PC bouncing around in the back of a truck. And I worked a summer for ... one of the major shippers, and the air packages didn't go through half as many hub transfers as the ground. And man did they (we, sorry) throw around the boxes. Remembering how the packages were treated makes me want to drive to the West coast and pick it up in person.
Of coarse, PCs are probably more rugged than most people think. I wonder how many PCs actually get damaged in ground delivery? Maybe there's not much risk. I hear DS uses good sturdy boxes for shipping. |

I opted for 3-day air for exactly this reason, but I believe my computer still spent a lot of time on a truck. Based on tracking info, I think it flew from California to Texas, and then it was driven the rest of the way to Pennsylvania. Actually, PCs probably less rugged than most think. They seem very susceptable to shock and vibration.

I used the free UPS Ground and while the outside of the box was a bit beat up, the system inside was pristine. The box and internal foam DSO uses is great.

I live in Alaska so everything comes up here via air, as there is no ground other truck/cargo shipper. Trust me, I have plenty of experience with shippers. If the Co. you are dealing will ship with a provider you want, the following are my choices.
US Post Office: almost as fast as the majors, price is right in line, and most time a better rate. My first choice.
Fed X and DHL: rates are about the same and so are the delivery times. If you have to ship via air, use one of the two.
UPS: I hate UPS! I would rather pay more NOT to have them on my property! Rude, nasty, and they could care less. I could go on but this is a non XXX forum.
The fact is, the major air shippers are for the shippers convience, not the buyers. I'll pay extra if the shipper will have my package go via USPO, however, most wil not do so. Extra handling on their end etc.
In any case, you have a major investment in a guality computer, extra $$$$ to go air may be a good decision. Having said that, I have to go air, so maybe I'm not a good person to use as an opinion.
I'm paying over $120 to get my DS compter, and happy to pay.

Yeah, I think I'll call and see if I can upgrade to three day air.
You ever read through the reviews on reselleratings? I dont mean just for DS, but for all the PC builders. One thing you hear over and over is how something got knocked loose and had to be reseated, or something snapped off of something, or something was cracked etc on the delievery. Maybe it will fly all the way to Kansas City without having to spend much time on a truck. Thanks everyone, |

that will be true of any electronics that are shipped, so I will let those slide unless multiple people are complaining that items just aren't packed well.
What got me to order from DSO was so many horror stories of customer service, and in the case of certain companies, countless stories of incorrect or no-name parts substituted.
Oh, and I'm in even further from DSO than you - I'm in Missouri - and ground freight was just find. the box had some corner damage, but it was so well-packed that nothing reached the computer. Edited by 67alecto - 07 Nov 2007 at 2:10pm |

from 67alecto:
"that will be true of any electronics that are shipped, so I will let those slide" Oh, yes I let thoses slide too. Shipping trouble isn't DS's fault -- in fact, I've heard that DS packs much better than the others. In fact, I can't think of a single complaint I have against DS. I was just wondering if when shipping a PC long distance, if Air might be a better choice. I've heard many say they've never had any problem with ground. And I've read about a lot of, mostly minor, damage from ground shipping. I guess it doesn't matter. If something is damaged in shipping, DS will replace it. I'll just stay with ground. |

Having a video store I receive about 4 shipments a week. My distributors use both fed-ex and ups as well as the usps. I have had plenty of damaged shipments in the 7 years i have been in business. I have put in over 2 dozen claims in the last 7 years from all carriers. One is no better than the rest. No matter what carrier you go with there are always going to be some problems. Just my 2 cents.

And for the "I live far away from DS" record. I lived in South Florida when I ordered my computer from DS and had it shipped ground......the only thing wrong was that the tiny power cable had come unplugged....and the UPS guy I had KICKED my computer off the back of his truck, hit my basketball hoop, scratched my driveway badly.........the computer was fine other than that...so DS definately packs their computers well.

Thanks Tybo. In those years, have you noticed a difference in damage between ground and air?

Only difference is that air gets there a fews days sooner. Sooner does not mean safer. I have had problems with air, ground and next day. It doesn't happen often considering the number of deliveries i have. My system arrived safe and sound.....runs like a champ. I live in new jersey so it was shipped a long way. It came ups ground. Took around 6 days from the time it left DSO in CA. Had a minor scratch on the case but no biggie (think it happen before it shipped because box was in great condition). I would use ground shipping if I were you and save some $$$$$. Maybe use the money you save to make some upgrades if need be. Hope that helps.

Just to put in a good word for UPS...
My system was shipped from California to Massachusetts by ground. My box arrived in nearly mint condition. The guy in the delivery truck handled my system like it was fine china coming off the truck and asked me if it was stereo equipment. He was pleasant and courteous.
Now, I have no way of knowing how it was treated before it reached me, but I will say, with all the UPS horror stories I read, you might think everyone in that company does nothing but play kickball with the packages at breaktime. I just figured I'd give that rarely seen "satisfied customer" point of view.

Yeah, I tend to filter out and forget all the times UPS came through and provided good customer service, and only remember that one time they didn't...

I'm the same with DHL. I was in a parking lot, making a left turn, and a DHL driver tried to pass me on the left and totalled my car. Total miracle that I didn't need an ambulance as the door wrapped around my leg and I was able to crawl out of the passenger side. Since I refused an ambulance (I'll know better next time), no police came, so no report. I filed a claim against the DHL office, and they refused to pay and filed a claim of their own (saying I failed to yield! to a person illegally passing me!). So, their insurance never paid me, and my insurance never paid them (of course).
Sort of left a sour taste in my mouth about their methods and training.
