My budget will be about $3k but of course, that does not mean that I need to spend that much :)

I definately want to get a laptop that has the 580 video card in it, but where I get lost is the differences in the different processors.

I would like to make sure this is going to last me about 3 years.  The gaming laptop I have now is about 2 years old and definately towards the end of its cycle.

So the 2 laptops that I am looking at are the x17 Level 4 and the x17e Level 2.

It appears that the only difference is that the x17 Level 4 has the 2860QM CPU with 8GB Memory (I dont care about Hard Drive size) and the x17e Level 2 has the 980 CPU with 6GB Memory.

So my questions are, how much difference is there going to be between those 2 CPUs?   Would I want to upgrade the x17e Level 2 to 12GB memory, and if so how much of a difference if any will that matter?     Also, are there any difference in the cases at all or is it all just internals that are difference between the x17 and the x17e?

Oh, also it appears that the memory in the x17 Level 2 is faster (1333mhz) compared to the memory in the x17e Level 2.   Not sure of how much of a difference that will make.   I can not upgrade the memory in the x17e Level 4 to 1333mhz unless I also upgrade the CPU which will take that laptop out of my budget.

Thank you very much

I'm not a laptop expert but some things remain the same desktop or laptop.

memory speed difference is like needle in a haystack, you will never notice it.

for gaming you have no need for more ram, 6GB or 8GB is more then enough for gaming.

the x17e has a desktop cpu in it, but its the old line of nehalem, still very powerful.

the x17 has the 2860QM which is a mobile/laptop cpu, its from teh new line of sandybridge.

the desktop cpu should run warmer then the laptop cpu, now I have not looked at the difference of these two, but normally the desktop is more powerful, however in this case you are comparing old gen cpu with new gen mobile cpu.
