Hello all, i've had the same lame computer for about 7-8yrs now, and it's time for an upgrade heh. I've done my research on sites, and decided on digitalstorm for many reasons over the other guys. Well here's the situation... the only game i play is World Of Warcraft, so i don't need any extremely cutting edge stuff, i have no plans to play the very demanding games. Right now, i'm getting 5-15fps depending on where i am, 20 sometimes heh very sad. I'm really looking to get a steady 60fps or so, again only in WoW.
Here is a link to what i've come up with, anything i should replace or add? Thanks a million in advance for any help i can get, this is my first time buying a real pc heh exciting. you need two gpus to play with high settings at that resolution, you can always add a gpu

A few things... to my understanding WoW doesn't play off of sli mode, so will the one 9800 GT be fine? is there a big difference worth getting the GTX version? Will 4gb ram be good enough with Vista 64bit? And is it worth it to buy Corsair over OCZ or does it not matter so long as i get the 1066Mhz version? I think the only other thing i need to figure out is Sound, using the onboard mobo sound will tax the system and not sound as good right? Is the Razor AC-1 card any good, or the Asus one maybe? the Asus one would be another 200 bucks, but if it's worth it then i might as well do it now. again thanks so much for such quick replies heh! looks like i'll be confident enough to place my order later tonite hopefully  |

Your correct.. WoW does not utilize SLI, so having one powerful card is the way to go.. I suggest going with a gtx 260 and forget about adding another card if all you play is WoW.
4gigs will be fine for vista 64 bit, id personally go with the corsair mem. (either way)
Honestly the onboard is good enough, I would just go with onboard now and see if it measures up to your standards.
Just remember, If you don't like the onboard you can always buy a soundcard off newegg and install it with ease.

if all you play is wow then you want to upgrade to a more powerfull card.
IMO not worth it to go from gt to gtx, if you thinking about upgrading go with a 260+ or something like that. ocz over corsair won't matter much, and if anything goes wrong they are under warranty, and yes 4GB is more then enough for 64bit and your apps and etc. I think Dsnewb210 presented the sound card stituation very well and as he said, and our sound guru also recommends, if you gonna get a sound card go with xonar |

no go with 780i, its capable of being upgraded to be pretty powerfull down the road when a q9650 is affordable for you, you can run it with a 780i but not a 680i

Could anyone expound a little on the difference between 780i and i7 920? Why get one versus the other other? Obviously price, but what actual performance could one see or benefit from?

sure,
780i is a mother board that runs core 2 duo or core 2 quad processor chips. core i7 920 is a processor chip. in short you are comparing a motherboard (780i) to a CPU chip (i7 920). Edited by DST4ME - 15 Jan 2009 at 3:57pm |

Thanks to everyone who helped me on the way! One last thing i want to make sure of, if i ever decided to go to an sli setup, it looks like everything will be pretty much set up for it? i love the forums here... so much to read and learn. but now i'm reading some things that may have turned me off from getting the system up a few posts... been reading this thread:

the special you are pointing to is $800 more, then this build, for $2700 I think we can config a better system then the special
the 1000w PSU allows you to upgrade to future GPUs, so it is very important. you can just add a 1000w to my build, and have it be future proof. but if you don't think you will ever need more then 2 x 260+ then don't worry about the PSU. |

cool thanks, yea i'd like to keep the price more in the 2k range, but when i saw that premade deal i didn't know how good of a steal it was, if at all lol.
The most stress the computer will be under would be a game playing, itunes or winamp in the background, and webpages if i were in windowed mode... is 3g of ram good enough for that? Or do you think i'm going to wish i had 6g, and maybe i should just get it now? i'm trying to think of my final questions heh bare with me and thank you for the responses |

If 6GB ram would break your budget now, I would suggest get 3GB now and upgrade to 6GB when you can afford to make the change. What you should be trying to get now is what you can afford with best option to upgrade various components as you can afford them.
In most cases, unless you are playing a graphics intensive game or doing something else with high graphics like video editing, 3GB would be good to start with, and upgrade later.

if change my config to 6GB of ram the price will go to $2217.0 then you get $125 off that price for the final price of $2092
for multitasking 6GB would be better but here is the deal, as Kryhavoc says, you can always add 3 more GB of ram later. so since you are on a budget, why not go with 3GB now, then if you see its not enough, you can order 3 more GB and if you need help adding them you can ask us or call DS. I don't know if you have ever added ram or not,but is very simple, simple as in a 12 year old can do it, that goes for most of the stuff, adding HDD, adding GPU, adding ram, all of these are extremely simple

OK but you have to take these into consideration:
its not $400 more, you forget that you get another $125 off the $2,392.00 with the current promotion, which does not apply to the special. so its $500+ more. second you can change anything in the rebuild and I can assure you that you don't want a 1TB HDD for your OS drive
with a 750w PSU your system isn't really future proof. you have 6GB of ram, you will never notice the difference between 1333 and 1600 and the 920 and 940 are made to run with the 1333. |

Way over my original plannings, but like most who say we're on a budget... we really just don't want to spend the money LOL  But i'm glad i got all the help i did and waited... or i would have been stuck w/ my original core2 duo and other crap that i could never upgrade with. For the extra money now, i won't have to upgrade a single thing for a long time heh. I'm about to order, so this is the last chance to chime in w/ any changes i should make heh

everything looks great, nice beast, now you can just add gpus or what ever else you want to this pc and keep it upto date.

Yeah, for some reason the default in the configuration is reader/reader...
You have a great system. The PSU and 6 GB RAM will keep you happy and give you room to grow for a long time.
 The 260 will let you cruise thru WoW, and it's an easy upgrade to add another for SLI for the future - other games, etc. Edited by lgm25c - 23 Feb 2009 at 4:36pm |
