Topic: Looking for Help with a Build Posted: 05 Mar 2010 at 5:27pm |
Hey everyone!
Just stumbled across this place, as I'm starting to look for a custom built computer. Just looking to see if I can get any ideas here, as there seems to be a lot of really cool, knowledgeable people here. I'd originally thought about using my old computer and putting one together myself, but I don't trust myself yet. So, here goes. I currently have a Dell XPS 400. I hate Dell. Never going back there again. This time around, I'm looking to spend no more than $1500 (I know, cheap), but I want more bang for my buck. 1) Monitor size and general resolution most games will be played on
I have a standard 17" Dell monitor that's attached to my system via plug&play. Must've forgotten to install the software after my last reformat. Will I be able to use this monitor in a new system? 2) Budget
I have a friend who said he put a really nice computer that would blow mine away for about $500. I think he might've had a few parts laying around. Either way, my budget would be $1500 or significantly less than that. :P 3) whether you will use any equipment from your last computer on
the new computer (keyboard, mouse, speakers, monitor etc) that way we
can budget that out of the build
I hope to use the monitor (see above), keyboard, mouse, speakers will all be used. 4) General uses to be done on the computer. (gaming, college work,
internet etc.) MMORPG gaming, music editing (sometimes recording), internet, word-processing. The gaming is by far the largest strain on the system. |

Ok, I've played around with the build a little bit more and came up with this build. Do I have anything on there I don't need? In your opinion, what would be the differences I would notice after having them out of the box and hooked up. What about in terms of future upgrades and compatibility?
Thanks for your help. Edited by elepheagle - 05 Mar 2010 at 6:00pm |

Make sure you grab the "Free" processor OC...you chose they pay one ;p
If you can muster out the extra hundred the 5770 is worth it. |

You forgot to change the overclock to the free one. You could use the money from that to upgrade the power supply to the corsair. That processor is solid, I have it myself. That being said, the build DST picked is much more solid and upgradable. A budget is a budget though so do what you have to, just trying to inform ya. The case you chose doesn't have good airflow just be warned. You could stick with the DS psu (would highly recommend corsair though) and upgrade to the haf 922.

Oops! Didn't realize cheeb had already pointed that out. Good luck with your build, just try to keep upgradability in mind.. Gpu and ram are quick easy upgrades. Cpu, mobo, psu, tower.. These you don't wanna sacrifice.

I don't like the case, it has very little airflow and room to grow, I don't even think the nvidia cards will fit in there.
the build I gave you has 2GB more ram, better psu, better gpu, better cpu cooler, win7 pro so you have xp mode, and on top of all of that, the x58 platform you can upgrade your cpu in a few years to a 6 core coming out this year, the cpu is the brain of your pc so a new cpu is like a new pc, but for $200 to $400 and thats in 3 years, the p55 platform does not support cpu upgrade to a 6 core. all of that for $100, so my question is, knowing all of that do you still want to go with the p55? if so then we need to change some stuff in that config, and just so you know by the time we do, you are gonna be maybe $40 off the price of my config. DST-
I appreciate the time you've taken to take a look at my inquiry. I'm a novice when it comes to hardware. Since my last post, I've looked into things a bit more, and what you are saying makes complete sense. It was the price tag that got me; my problem is that, although I can afford a system, it's a want and not a need. That's the part I wrestle with. :P Consider this thread closed. |

well all I can tell you is that, when times where tough for me back in the day, and I could not buy a new pc ever 3 or 4 years, being able to upgrade the cpu was a huge deal to me, since by just spending couple of hundred dollars I could upgrade the cpu, and the pc's performance would be better and like a new pc to me, so that was/is to me more of a matter of need then want, I think that many people out there can't afford to buy a new pc every 3 or 4 years, for those people I think its best to go with a an x58 platform, mainly cause the cpu can be upgraded to the new 6 core cpus coming out this year. this can help people own their pc for 6 or 7 years and really enjoy it and have a better performing pc after 3 or 4 years, and I'm sure you know in that amount of time, apps get more demanding, and one's pc seems slower, so a new boost of power for cheap is a well coming if not a need around that time.
thats the way I looked at it, yes you are spending a $100 here and maybe say $300 in 3 years, but you get a faster, better performing pc in 3 years, that much better then paying $1600 in 3 years to get a new pc, or just wishing you could get a new pc but being stuck with the one you have without a cpu upgrade. maybe that helps, it was my pleasure and good luck |
