Hi All!
I've been watching DS for a while (over a year) and keeping an eye on the forums. Historically I have bought from well known companies but have received less than stellar quality and service. I'm really ready for an extreme machine and a company that cares. So... I'm looking to buy in the next week or so. My budget is under $3k and I want a machine that can run WoW and other RPG's and real time strategy games with settings on high at 1680x1050 resolution or higher without breaking a sweat. Here is the config I came up with and I would appreciate any feedback you guys may have, as you definitely know more than I do. Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master HAF 932 Exterior Finish: - Not Available Trim Accents: - Not Available Processor: Intel Core i7 960 3.2GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: EVGA X58 LE Edition SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports SLI or CrossFire) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 1000W Digital Storm Certified (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition Highly Recommended) Expansion Bay: Internal Digital Media Card Reader (Black) Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Set 1 Raid Options: - Not Available Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1.5TB Seagate Barracuda (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) (SATA) (Extreme Speed) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 22x / CD-Writer 48x) (LightScribe Edition) Optical Drive 2: Blu-Ray Player/DVD Player (Play Blu-Ray and Play DVDs) Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 896MB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Razer Barracuda AC-1 (Recommended) Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Asetek Liquid CPU Cooler (120mm Radiator) H20 Tube Color:- Not Available Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Blue) Enhancements: - Not Available Chassis Mods: - Not Available Noise Reduction: - Not Available Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Requires Air Cooling Upgrade) Boost Video Card: - Not Available Boost Memory: - Not Available Boost OS: - Not Available Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - Not Available Office: - Not Available Benchmarking: - Not Available Install/Test Game: FREE: Please include a free copy of a hot-selling game Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - White (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-10 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty Couple questions... First I know i9 chips are coming out soon... Are they worth waiting for? Second, is 1000W enough to power this beast? Third, are there cooling options that would better suit this rig and reduce noise? Fourth, are their wireless internet options available? Fifth, Should I skip on the video cards and buy my own? Sixth, should I stick with Nvidia? Thanks in advance for all your input! |

1. its not called i9 anymore, its i7 980x, and instead of waiting for them, get a 920 now and upgrade to it in 2 years when its much cheaper, for games it will not make a big difference anyways.
2. yes 1000w is enough but you want the corsair 1000w, not the one you picked. 3. the cooling option you have is not great right now, also most of your noise comes from your gpus, to LC them you will be out of your budget. 4. blackops builds have the wireless card but you can install those yourself real easy, if you need help we will walkt you thru. 5. no, it won't make much of a difference here, and we need to change it anyways. 6. not at this time, I love nvidia, but we have to go with who ever has the best performance for the current games and onces coming out and right now thats ati. My pleasure

there is a lot more than one hexacore, so saying it is a 980x is not very accurate

So one 1x ATI Radeon HD 5850 1GB will give better framerates and performance than 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 896MB (Includes PhysX Technology)?
Plus I see that you put the OS on a 120G Solid state drive... Does that affect performance much? And final question in the series... Is the Intel Core i7 960 3.2GHz (Quad Core) overkill over the Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core? |

no 1 x 5850 does not give better performance then 2 x 275, however they will both give you 50 to 60 fps at your res so you will never notice the difference between the two, and the 5850 support dx11 which is better for future games.
everything will boot faster and your read and write speed will be much faster also. you will see no difference between a 960 @ 3.7GHz and a 920 @ 3.7GHz. |
