Topic: Lumos Build Posted: 21 Jan 2020 at 7:23pm |
Budget:
$5000 Expectations: 1440p gaming, reasonable all-core CPU overclock, straight-forward to assemble/disassemble. Looking for a system I can increase my confidence to in upgrading, replacing failed components, tear-down for cleaning, and eventually confidence in building my own system. I would like to overclock the CPU within the capability of the cooler; leave the GPU running stock. Custom CPU cooling selected to provide extra head-room for overclocking the 3950x. Two NVME drives selected (one boot; one currently playing games). One SATA SSD selected for bulk library storage. Looking at ordering 5/8/2020. Specific date. :) I didn't see an Elgato-type streaming part offered. May have just overlooked it. May want to get an additional hard drive for footage of gameplay. I'm guessing you have a purpose for the Ryzen CPU you select and that you know it's not the gaming part the Intel 9900K is. I have to mention that May is still pretty far off, and parts offered then might change a bit. For instance, Nvidia is projected to release the next gen GPUs perhaps by then.
If you want to get inside your build, I'd recommend you think about buying that 2 TB SSD online and installing it yourself. It's easy and would save you quite a bit. You said in your narrative you'd leave the GPU at stock, but selected the DS overclock. Then there's always the internal lighting for free. |

Just submited my order for the above system. I did add a UPS, keyboard and mouse. Been used to using laptops so long, I've taken for granted having power when the lights go off.
Once the system arrives, I plan to open a thread in the customer review section. I really like the idea of maintaining that thread as the years go by. Thanks guys for all of your assistance. |

I switched my order from the Velox to the Lumos because of the cases being back ordered and things have been moving along pretty well. It was in Final Assembly for a couple of days and now it's in Stress Testing. I don't know how many machines they work on at a time but I imagine there are groups of various builds in each stage. Hopefully they'll box it up and fire it off my direction this week. |

I was looking over your build list. Its a much more complex system than mine, at least, cooling wise. It goes fast once you get past ghe stress test. You're gonna love it! |

Keep in mind the notifications you get are not in actual time as they happen. Be assured they stress-tested your rig overnight, and everything was a GO! It's getting to look a lot like !!! The shipping gods like a cardboard sacrifice in their honor.... |

The shipping gods accepted their sacrifice. Just got my shipment notification from DS. I was expecting UPS or Fed Ex. Instead, I had to Google R L Carriers. Package was picked up today, 2/25, and is expected 3/3. Guess I'll be coughing up a fur ball on Tuesday.

So your system was at Stage 7 on the 14th of Feb, but wasn't shipped until the 25th? Yikes! Mine hit stage 7 on Tuesday, Feb 25th and I was really hoping to see a shipping notice any time. I need to make a cardboard sacrifice NOW!

Didn't get too far in my tweaking and testing. Something about having to go to work the next day...
Spent yesterday getting the feel for the system. Found the BIOS was two updates back (1105 vs 1302). Downloaded the BIOS OK onto a FAT32 formatted USB. Kept getting a proper BIOS could not be found error. Then I realized with the help of Reddit that I was downloading the BIOS for the non-WiFi motherboard. Whoops. At least the system is idiot proof! Downloaded the correct BIOS and updated without fail. I downloaded Macrium Reflect to make an image of my boot drive. Played around with downloading a couple of game launchers - Steam, Origin, Bethesda, Epic. Learned that a couple of those launchers require installation on the C drive if they will continue to function post image restore. Tonight's mission should I accept is to run Windows Update; reinstall the launchers; install at least one game per launcher; then create a new image back-up; download an additional game per launcher; and perform an image restore to determine if I have properly separated my games from my boot drive. I want to be able to restore the boot drive from time to time with near stock cleanliness. Once I've satisfied I've spent enough time fooling around, I'll get back to the business of clearing Mars of demons. FYI: idle temps of both CPU and GPU are in the 30s. I did hit a high of 60 over the course of playing with Windows. I plan to keep everything stock until I've had time to see how much thermal head room I have. |

Just a brief update.
Everything has been working great. Still putting the system through its paces before I write my review. Only thing I've noticed as a limitation has been the air-cooled GPU. While playing some games such as Far Cry 5, the GPU temp hits 83 degrees C. At that temp, the GPU downclocks as designed. Unfortunately, that also means the max clock you see in the image above won't be sustained. Not a negative in any way. Just an observation. I also turned on DOCP in the BIOS. Thus, I am now getting a reasonable max out of my Corsair 3200 RAM. I really appreciate the fact Asus installed a CMOS reset button on the IO shield. I was thinking I would have to remove the GPU card to get at the CMOS after borked the memory overclock. Edited by GrandesBollas - 14 Mar 2020 at 8:43am |

First month complete since I received the system. Time for maintenance:
No dust buildup on the top fans (they are exhaust), and no appreciable buildup on the fans or radiator. Looks like a monthly cleaning schedule is good. |

Wow that is a lot of dust for 1 month. Do you keep it on 24/7? What you call the top fans are not blowing out. The fans blow towards the bracket holding their motor. you will notice a small amount of dust build up in the fins. Thank you for the images and reports.

Nice GN matt and nice looking rig. Do you plan on adding your GPU to the loop?
