Wellllllllll
Been lurking around this website for several months deciding whether to make my next gaming machine myself, or to go with a outside builder. My last machine was a dual core I built with my bare hands (first time building one). This year I figured I'd get myself a treat, help drive economy...all the while making a smaller company some $$$ (likely excuse for getting a badarse system, eh? ;) ) My "wanna-be-budget" is actually around 1700-1800. My I'll buy it 'and prolly feel guilty afterwards' is around 2000-2200. Due to this I was initially looking at the ODE level 2 but slowly, due to some sort of website mind control (I swear!) scooted on up to ODE lvl3 and further configs. My problem is the ASUS board the ODE has......the machines that let you custom build all note it as being NON-SLI compatible (I want to SLI someday in the future but not on this purchase). But the ODE builds do not list this fact O_o This frightens me. So I "cheated" and further lurked and found a few builds others' posted that I liked...then frankensteined them into this monstrosity: build config # 753221 Can anyone take a quick peek at the build and give me suggestions? Feel free to scold me for lurking so long and waiting till the last second ;) Also, anyone have any answers over the ODE mobo ASUS P8Z77-V LX ?.....it does not mention the non-sli yet the same model # on custom does. Is this an oversight or am I missing something? Things to note: This is a pure gaming machine, I WILL SLI in the later future and I want something that will last at least 2-3ish years.............. did I mention that I like games? |

I think that is a pretty good build you have there.

Ah - was uncertain if I was missing something about that LX mobo.... its a shame but oh well! Looks like I may end up with my custom. May tweak it a bit......unsure if I REALLY need a solid state drive (never owned one on any of my 5 machines) but everyone hypes about its loading benefit for the OS/games, etc. Anyone else think its definetly worth the $$$ or skippable?.......the cost of the machine is quite well within my means but I'd like to avoid the guilt if at all possible ;) That stupid frugal fairy is in my ear lol I do like that sabertooth mobo so I think any config I get will have it even if I further tweak.

I don't have an SSD and am perfectly happy. But, once you go SSD some say you'll never go back.
It helps with loading OS quicker and a bit smoother in games when heavy rendering is going on. Nice but certainly not succesary. The Sabertooth is a real nice mobo and its 5 year warranty as opposed to 3 years for most others tells of it quality. As far as sli, I tend to think if you don't sli within the first few months you probably won't. As new graphic cards get released those are the ones you'll want. But, that might not be your case.

You may have a point concerning the SLI. Still kinda on the fence about the SSD but leaning toward its exclusion to save some capitol that can be spent on different parts......the issue is that there ain't much left to upgrade - pretty much got what I want out of the machine! Thanks for being so responsive btw, guys :)

Your build is pretty much a copy of the ODE-4 build except for the case and you only have a single GPU. For $200 more dollars you can get the ODE-4 with SLI GPUs. That is a pretty good deal in my mind.

On further thought I think I'm going to stick with my original plan of one card.
Either way, thanks for the idea of reconsidering the ODE lvl4, FrankW. My main reason: I'm expecting the SLI killers to come out in a year or 2 so I may even pass SLI by....... With this in mind it may be cost saving for me to go back to ODE lvl3 without a SLI mobo......but I still want the sabertooth mobo because its damn good according to my research. I'm very close to pulling the trigger. If anyone can answer - What do you think of the 240mm water cooler vs that air stage 2 cooling fan? Is going water cooled a good or idea for this case/mobo? I've never had water cooling before - one of the reasons I was going to a custom builder was I KINDA wanted to try it...but I dont HAVE to have it. What do you think? |

The 240mm water cooler requires zero maintenance, and is pre-filled with thermal conductive fluid improving cooling performance and efficiency. Its not true water cooling like the sub zero and frost chill.
Also closed-loop liquid coolers are not intended to be user-serviceable since all the connectors and hoses are barbed and crimped, once assembled they cannot easily be taken apart without significant risk of ruining them. If the pump fails or something leaks, the official repair is replacement of the whole thing. Edited by ArkansasWoman777 - 23 Nov 2012 at 12:06pm |

That I did not know This prompted me to go take a look at the closed loop liquid vs real water cooling methods..........not only am I gonna get a cool PC out of this but apparently I'm learning things :P Not sure why I never looked up this info before. Still making final decision but prolly pulling trigger tonight.Right now comparing the 500R corsair vs the 600T corsair (Yes I like corsair cases ;p ) Not sure the minor benefits of the 600 warrant the extra 60 bucks.

Trigger Pulled. XD
Thanks for the input, peeps. Can't wait for this thing. I knew of DS from when I made my last PC but didn't feel like going with a builder and ---- this will be a first for me :) Hope it meets my expectations ;p They have quite a rep. Oh I decided to pretty much stick with original build. Same case and all. Took an extra few hrs to decide between going this route or ODE 4 thanks to Frank's input but I think I'll be ok with what I have.

Erm....should I be concerned that my PC went from stage 2 to 5 in a fast fired string of emails? ;)
I'm assuming that it was just sent in after the fact (I'm IT - sometimes we do that with trouble tickets ourselves lol) but I was looking forward to the thing getting the stress testing they claim they do. Maybe my nervousness is unfounded but I'm hoping its not being fast tracked -_- (maybe its a good thing?) |

I ended up going with a custom unit - albeit a very baic non-frills one. This is what may account for the speed. I was just a bit freaked because apparently they were working on saturday, I guess ;)

Well fed ex screwed the pooch and now I can't get unit until timorrow - have it setup for pickup and I'm a bit nervous. Not hearing good things about fed ex ( I am a ups guy, personally) but I did not see any specific shipper choices when ordering.
I really hope they treat PCs with shipping respect........or there's going to be........problems. Major problems ;)

My DS rig shipped Calif. To Connecticut without a scratch on the box. FedEx here was great. He even helped me haul the monster box inside. Chances are you will be fine.
