Topic: Lynx Storage Questions Posted: 15 Nov 2019 at 8:00pm |
In the description of the Lynx series it says: Up to 2x 3.5" HDDs ; Up to 2x 2.5" SSDs Does this mean it has room for two HDDs *and* two SSDs for a total of 4 drives, or does it mean a total of two drives which can be HDDs or SSDs? Also, does the motherboard contain two M.2 2280 slots and 4 SATA ports for all levels of Lynx? Thanks! |

Yes, even the Lynx 1 has 4 SATA ports, and it's a very basic Ryzen micro ATX board. It has no M.2 slots, however.
The level 2,3, and 4 have 4 SATA ports and ONE M.2 NVMe capable slot that DS does not use for the SSD. If you put a SATA M.2 drive in that slot, it will disable SATA port 2. If you use an NVMe drive there, you will still have 4 SATA ports total. Does that help? |

That is helpful concerning the motherboard ports and slots. Thanks.
However it still does not answer my first question, which is more about the number of physical drive bays in the case. Is there room in the case to install 2 X 2.5" SSDs *plus* 2 X 3.5" HDDs for a total of 4 drives (plus an NVMe drive on the MB)? Or are there two bays that can be occupied by either SSDs or HDDs for a total of 2 drives of either type in any combination? The description on the Lynx page is ambiguous. It says: Up to 2x 3.5" HDDs ; Up to 2x 2.5" SSDs |

All of the new cases place the 2.5" and 3.5" drives flat in bays on the backside of the motherboard tray.
From the DS Configurator Case Info for Lynx.... EXPANSION Internal 3.5" Drive Bays 2 Internal 2.5" Drive Bays 3 (2 from 3.5"bay) That said, SSD's are thin and flat...there are ways to mount extras in any case using velcro if needed. |

Can confirm. I have 2 SSDs nested together in 1 physical bay. As they don't generate heat and have a smaller footprint, they stack very easily. |
