Alienware/Dell announced a laptop that is the fastest in the universe. I think it is called the M17x. How does that compare to the fastest DS laptop. And compare in performace and $ to DS fastest laptop.

of course the DS laptop is faster, DS offers you actual l7 920, 940, 950 or 975 in a laptop, you think little dinky qx9300 will compete?
qx9300 is at 2.5GHz a 920 is at 2.6GHz a 940 is at 2.9GHz a 950 is at 3.06Ghz a 975 is at 3.33GHz the only thing m17x has on DS is a dual 280m as an option where DS offers only a signle 280m. not sure what ssd brands dell is using. if you try and config similar system here and there, you will see the dell will cost more for no reason. here you see a faster laptop by DS cost less then the slower laptop by dell: DS laptop: Here you go Ticket# 292329 --- Price: $3666 (To see this build click here) Price after current promotion $3466 Copy of Specifications: Chassis: Benchmark Crusher (Model: D9280) (Weight: 11.55LBS) Display: 17 inch WUXGA with Enhanced Glossy Surface (Resolution: 1920 x 1200) Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 940 2.93 GHz (Quad Core) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 at 1066MHz (Extreme-Performance) Inputs: 4 USB 2.0 Ports / Gigabit Ethernet LAN / V.92 Modem / 1394 FireWire / 7-in-1 Card Reader Main Storage: 1x (120GB Solid State (By: OCZ) Vertex Series (Model: OCZSSD2-1VTX120G) Extra Storage: - No Thanks Raid Options: - No Thanks Optical Drive: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 8x / CD-Writer) Wireless Access: 802.11 A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module Features: Desktop Computer Platform / Supports Up To Three Hard Drives Outputs: DVI/CRT Port / S-Video / Headphone / Microphone Video Card(s): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M 1GB External TV Tuner: - No Thanks Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Protection: - No Thanks Office Suite: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks Carry Bag: - No Thanks External Cooling: - No Thanks External Keyboard: - No Thanks External Mouse: - No Thanks External Speakers: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Full Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Labor & 1 Year Parts Warranty --------------------------------------------------------- M17X: price $3748.00
--------------------------------------------------------- now lets review shall we
DS cpu: Intel Core i7 940 2.93 GHz (Quad Core)(1333 MHz qpi(FSB)) M17X cpu: Intel® Core™2 Extreme Quad QX9300 2.53GHz (1066MHz FSB) DS wins with a faster cpu 2.93Ghz and faster qpi(FSB)1333MHz ram is the same for both DS HDD: 120GB Solid State (By: OCZ) Vertex Series M17X HDD: 128GB god knows what brand DS wins, no matter what the brand of ssd M17X has, the vertex should be faster with the new firmware and it will have better wear and tear, overall better quality ssd for you money. DS gpu: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M 1GB M17X gpu: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M, 1GB DS wins with the 280M DS price: $3466 M17X price: $3748 DS wins better price. conclusion, faster cpu, faster gpu, better ssd, all for $300 less. DS is the winner
we won't even dicuss Alienware's sh*tty customer service and low quality parts. I think world's fastest laptop would be one with a i7 975 which DS offers and its not even an option with the M17X. Also DS offers up to 3 HDDs, M17X offers only up to 2 HDDs. DS offers raid on up to 3 SSDs, M17X offers raid of only 7200rpm HDDs no option to raid SSDs. if the M17X with those limitations is the fastest laptop in the universe then my name is barack obama
somebody call Alienware and let them know the universe is much bigger then their headquarters Edited by DST4ME - 10 Jun 2009 at 5:38am |

Great response. Only questions I have is whether the overclocking they offer makes a difference? I suppose DS does too. Also, do the dual card solution with overclocking, make theirs the fastest in the universe. They claim on their website this. I wonder how they claim the part where they say they offer the fastest CPU in a laptop?

you can't/don't want to OC laptops, cause they can't handle the heat.
In the config section of M17X it says:
there is no discussion of OCing the CPU. wonder how they claim the part where they say they offer the fastest CPU in a laptop? simple they are full of sh*t
see the qx9300 is currently the only quad core laptop cpu made, based on that they are trying to say since its in their laptop its the fastest laptop but as I just showed you its not, since other builders like DS have laptops with faster cpus in them, it may not be a mobile cpu but it does not need to be, it just needs to be able to run in a laptop which it does. the gpu has nothing to do with your laptop speed, sure it helps in games that support sli but in games that don't its pointless. pc speed first and formost is based on cpu, a cpu at 2.9Ghz will do many tasks much faster then a cpu at 2.5GHz Edited by DST4ME - 10 Jun 2009 at 1:31pm |

Most people I know say HP sucks, my friends that have PC repair shops say that HP keeps them in good business.
I for one have never been a HP fan, I have had dells and like my dell PCs but you can't upgrade them and I can't even compare them with DS. alienware plain sucks.

I have a funny story to tell.
A couple months ago I wanted to buy a used Alienware M17x laptop from some guy on eBay for around $1600 bucks. My card had a $1500 limit so I couldn't pay for it unless I notified my bank, which I didn't feel like doing, so about two weeks later the guy canceled the transaction. Somehow I came across Digital Storm while looking for another computer to buy and instead purchased a brand new i7 rig for under $1500. I'm so happy that I wasn't able to buy that laptop because I would have been stuck with a crappy base model Alienware laptop. Just to stay on topic the S17 that DS offers blows away any laptop Dellienware makes. |
