Topic: Machine for Video editing & general use Posted: 14 May 2012 at 9:56am |
Budget:
$2,000 to $3,000 Expectations: Looking for a machine that will allow me edit with Premier Pro CS6 & do general PC work - email, internet, Microsoft Office. Usage: The biggest demand will be the video editing with Premiere Pro and usage of the other Adobe products. Mainly edit HDV & some DV. There will be no gaming done on this machine - work only! Special Needs: I'm hoping to get a quiet machine, but not sure how realistic that will be. Thank you in advance for taking the time to help me out! |

Hi PheonixDevil....Welcome to the forums.
Here's a build to check out and I'll explain. Config # 688104 Cost $ 2687 Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master 942 HAF X Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 3820 3.6GHz (Turbo Mode up to 3.8GHz) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth X79 (Intel X79 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s) System Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Corsair HX (Dual SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (180GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: 520 Series) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (Model: Black Edition) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: Blu-Ray & DVD Writer/Reader (Burn + Play Blu-Ray & DVDs) (12x BD-R) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 2GB (Includes PhysX) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Corsair H100 Liquid CPU Cooler (240mm Radiator) (Extreme-Performance Edition) H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 1: Overclock CPU 4.0GHz to 4.4GHz Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty I changed motherboard to the X79 platform, it's quad channel memory, faster for your apps than the dual channel ram of Z77. You could go to the six core i7-3930k chip instead of the 4 core I put in, but it would be anothr $300. I changed psu to the 750Hx, tops in reliability and a 7 year warranty. The gtx580 was dropped for the latest, gtx 670, cheaper and a better performer and runs much cooler with less juice needed.. Changed the cpu cooler to the H100. The Vortex isn't all that great and the H100 is quieter on low-medium settings. DS might not overclock the i7-3820 but I put in stage 1 oc, because they said in some cases it might work. You could just drop the oc stage 1 and go with the chips build-in turbo. I would try it and see what they say. Oc'ing is a bump in processing. Noise suppression with this HafX would be a waste. The HafX is the best air cooled case and why mess with fan speeds. I forgot to put in the 32GB memory, but a easy fix if you need it. If you change to the 32GB you'll have a similar priced system that performs better than your build both in ram usage for editing and video graphic performance. See what you think and good luck. Wow! Thank you very much for your "rebuild" of my system - I was not expecting this level of assistance!
When I get a chance, I will go to the config number and check it out - probably going to the 32GB memory. Thank you again and I'll let you know what I decide. |

my build also is 3820 and from what i have read on numerous forums the 3820 has no problem overclocking, it is partially unlocked and just has to be done a different way then a K unlocked chip would be overclocked

I'm considering biting the bullet and updating to the 3930 as from what I've been able to find out, the additional cores make a big difference in how fast projects will render.
I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on what the difference would be with a 3820 overclocked and a 3930 running normal (or even overclocked). My fear is that 1 year from now I'm sitting here wishing I had just coughed up the extra $300 for the 3930 and faster render times. |

If it's in the budget, I would say the i7-3930 for sure. You know the editing better than I but the six core even not oc' d will give better performance. Plus., the 3930k is easier for DS to oc., giving even more processing power.

It's definitely a budget buster, taking it over the $3,000 mark, but I average a new machine every 4 or 5 years and usually limp through the last year or so - so I am leaning towards the 3930. This will be the most powerful & expensive machine I will have purchased and I'd like to stretch it's life over as many years as possible and not be watching a render take forever while wondering how much faster it would be if I had just gotten the 3930. Tough decisions. Money does factor in. As far as overclocking, the 6 core does generate more heat and oc' ing adds to it. Go with the modest stage 1 oc' ing and with DS doing it right, you' ll be good to go. Cpu longrvity won' t be an issue. The H100 can handle it. When DS oc's they save the settings in a custom profile in the Bios. You can always load default profile and undo. Us or DS are always there to help.

I have completed my order and wanted to give an update, but first wanted to express my thanks to everyone who helped, especially bprat22 who really helped steer me in the right direction with my build.
I did decide to go with the i7 3930K as everything I read said the benefits would be noticeable compared to the 3820 when rendering video files with Adobe Premiere Pro/Encore, etc. I increased the memory to 32GB to hopefully avoid any issues while editing and doing other work simultaneously. I stayed with bprat22's recommendations regarding the motherboard (Sabertooth X79) and Video card (GeForce GTX670). One item I did drop was the overclocking. In chatting with the online chat help, it seemed the greatest benefit to OC would be in gaming - something I will not be doing with this machine. They then recommended to use the Noctua fan as opposed to the liquid cooling so I went that route. I figured if I want to explore OC down the road, I can revisit it then. If anyone is curious, the config number is 688247. Thank you again and now the really hard part begins - waiting for the machine! Edited by PhoenixDevil - 15 May 2012 at 12:07pm |
