Grandparents have this old arse laptop that they DON'T use.  Has antique specs (768 Mhz!) and the OS is most likely pirated since I see thai symbols on the keyboard, and I tried updating anyways, and for some reason the OS isn't legit, so god knows where that laptop came from.  Also there's all sorts of glitches physically on the keyboard itself, where characters are out of place and all that.

Anyways they live in the Philippines, and they obviously need a new computer.  Just for viewing e-mails and a whole lotta family photos though.  They're a bit computer illiterate, since it took an hour on the phone just to explain to them on how to move the mouse and double click on "Mozilla Firefox" and from there even took longer to explain how to type yahoo.com on the address bar lol.

So yeah my mother made me check Dell and for $500 for a WHOLE bunch of stuff that isn't needed, and they don't need Vista, XP is stable enough for e-mail viewing,  and they're not gonna do net browsing that they'd need a security software either.

Cheapest on Newegg, I understand I need to provide the hard drive, RAM, and OS too though.  But provided all of those I bet I can still be under $300

Unless of course you guys happen to know some site (heck maybe e-bay) for getting a good plain standard, nothing flashy computer, that can handle e-mail and picture viewing.  (The picture viewing most likely coming from snapfish.com, since my cousins recommended uploading family photos there)

Even the integrated graphics can probably handle youtube videos if my grandparents ever come to that, and I'm pretty sure it'll never will >.>;

So $350 at the most?  Could I attain the ability to "view e-mail and pictures" for a cheaper price by building with bare parts?

Of course I wasn't referring to a laptop.  I was referring to a plain computer built by me.

What about a netbook?

If not, tigerdirect usually has good refurbished PC deals.

I'd probably go with this one:

It don't get much cheaper than those.

Ebay or second hand stores might suit you best if you want a price point under $200. Anything you'd buy new is over kill. We are just talking about internet and pictures here. Anything made in the past few years that came with XP on it would work, hell Windows 95/98 will still do what you need.

I still have an old Compaq laptop that is essentially Venom's first emachines computer that he listed. It has a 1.99Ghz single core CPU, 512mb of DDR1 RAM and a Radeon 200M GPU, Window XP OS, 60GB Hard Drive...this thing is archaic...but you know what?

-It still works
-It surfs the web just fine ( it's actually my pron box >.> )
-It plays old games (Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate 2, Civ 4... ect)
-It's still in one peice

So I'd say that the Emachines is perfect for your needs and doesn't require an upgrade of anysort. Good find V.
