Is one better than the other?

I ask because lately I've taken to running both consecutively and seeing that which ever I run last picks up some strays that the first one missed.

Currently using CCleaner, these two anti-malware and the avast! pro scans to stay clean.

Any other recommendations for a better mouse(malware)trap?

how is the superantispyware? is it free? currently i am using ccleaner and malwarebytes along with microsoft security essentials as my antivirus

I also use Malwarebytes and CCleaner, only a weekly basis.    So far that's taken care of any issues that I know of.

There are two programs you needs. Anti-Malwarebytes (the free version is freaking amazing) and RogueKiller. CCleaner is great and all. Quite popular, but I promise you with AMB and RogueKiller you'll say problem free 99% of the time, and should you encounter a problem, these two will most likely be able to fix it.

I use both of them for all of my clients needs. As a professional, they are amazing life savers. Great tools. I have yet to find anything better.

I run Malwarebytes and like it. Their support is also very good.

Malwarebytes, free version, is a program you run periodically to look for malicious hits. It doesn't run in the background like virus protection does so can be used with any other protection software.

Caymus, I run Win8.1 (64) and avast! pro antivirus together.  For cleaning, I use CCleaner, Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware.  The cleaning programs, for me, are done weekly.  I've picked first thing Sunday morning to do the internal cleaning because I have some quiet time to myself and I can poke around to make sure the machine stays in proper working order.  I'll probably incorporate some physical cleaning as well, now that I've found how to access the filters on my Vanquish II.
 
If Windows Defender is running, I don't notice it.  I'm not a big fan of M$oft's attempts to keep us safe from malware.

If you pay for a subscription, it will run alongside your anti-virus software and protect you as well.  It has website blocking and I've found it very useful.

For web browsing, I've found a very nice addon for Firefox, Chrome, IE, Opera, and Safari called Web of Trust (WOT).  It will actually give you a rating next to links about whether their crowdsourcing has determined a web site to be safe or not.

I'm looking to step up from Windows Defender in 8.1 Pro.  Any recommendations for free or paid solutions?  I like how unobtrusive and out-of-your-face Defender and Security Essentials before it are.  I've paid for ESET NOD32 and Vipre in the past.

I use Norton Antivirus (purchase + annual subscription) for my Windows OS. Why? Its heuristic analysis catches malware before other antivirus products have their databases updated. I have used various Norton products from back in the MD-DOS days, but I become sold on the antivirus product when it caught the Melissa virus that slipped passed other commercial and free antivirus products of the day.

There are, however, many good antivirus products on the market today. The most important thing is to have something running to protect your system.

I have Avira AV (paid version) running in the background for AV monitoring and firewall. Malwarebytes (paid) monitors for malware/adware etc. and on top of that I use SpyHunter (paid) to run a daily scan. I have set CCleaner to clean out the system on initial boot and I defrag and optimize with Auslogic Disk Defragger once a week. I suppose this may be overkill but these utilities are very unobtrusive, the ones that run in the background do not interfere with system performance in any way and Win 8.1 does a much better job than its predecessors in recognizing these products and adapting itself to them to avoid unwanted redundancies.
