which CPU?  for X58 platform 1600Mhz is fine, with the 6 core CPU, and 3 or 4 GPU's some games will benefit from RAM faster than 1600Mhz, but not much. the 1156 socket boards have dual channel instead of tri channel RAM, so 2000 Mhz can show small gains, but again, it is small..

Timings are complicated, some refer to the first few timings like 8-8-8-24, or some go by just the first number, like CAS 8.. some only care about, what the potential timings are of the complete set of timings including the sub timings, and the RTLs. and could care less about the rated timings.

Most games will not see any gain going from say CAS 8 to CAS 7, maybe in an extreme case of CAS 11 to CAS 6 will you really see any gain, and it still is pretty minimal.
The i7 can be bottle necked with 1066Mhz RAM, I have proven this, and posted test results in the past, but once you get to about 1600Mhz, there is very little to gain.
The little that there is to gain, will come from many hours of tweaking the numerous sub timings that Digital Storm, or for that matter, and custom builder will not do. It would just cost way too much, for the gain. I have  spent 50-70 hours dialing in the sub timings on a some rigs, trying to get the last drop of performance, it will show a few % better FPS than not doing it, but it is not worth it, unless you are trying to set records.
