First-off you are probably never going to use 12GB of ram, and by that I mean if one night you went to sleep and we took out 6GB of your 12GB of ram, you would never know unless you looked inside your PC and saw them missing.

second you are confusing the two

more ram = more multi tasking

higher ram speed = faster ram speed.

so you got 12GB of 1333MHz ram vs 6GB of 1600MHz ram

1600MHz is faster speed

12GB is more multi tasking.

now the difference between 1333MHz and 1600MHz is nothing you will notice, and 12GB is nothing you will ever use.

so its simple then

if you got the money to spare, go with 6GB of 1600MHz ram.

if you don't got the money to spare, go with 6GB of 1333MHz ram, you will never notice the difference.

If you have any questions, fire away

Actually, there was no confusion here.

Basically, I was curious about the difference between increased lower speed ram versus decreased higher speed ram.  Or in other words, which combo is the best for overall performance?

Thanks for the answer.  You say that 12 GB would be wasted...it will be interesting to see when that is the norm!  As it is, I will be going from a basic 2 GB for XP to a basic 6 GB for Vista 64.

Honestly I'm not sure when that would be the norm, but I'm pretty sure its many years away.

you will love your i7 system with 6GB of ram, it will handle what ever you throw at it.

Also keep in mind that with 12GB all your dimms will be full and that can mess with your OC stability.

What kind of multi-tasking are we talking here to make use of that much RAM?

I usually listen to music while playing games, and have browsers open in the background. I'm on 6GB RAM at the moment. I noticed that while I'm just browsing with nothing else running (such as iTunes), I'm sitting at around 1.5GB of RAM being utilized.

Also, how exactly can Full DIMMs harm OC stability? Honest question, because I can't find an answer or reason from searching elsewhere.

Only thing that would use all that ram potentially would be video encoding and any other form of media applications.  (That and graphic art with giant resolution images)

Why does filling up you dimms mess with your system? Just asking because I have 8GB with 4 2s of Dominator at 1600. When I built this maxed out system DS never once said anything about problems filling out your dimms. What type of problems can occur anyways? I would hope DS would not just want my money and steer me away from doing that if the potential for problems exsisted especially since I said many times to them I wanted to avoid that type of thing. This is not the first time I heard that either I wonder why they never mentioned it to me I even said  I didnt know that much I just wanted the best there is. Oh well, I guess at least thats one thing thats easy to correct if something should occur but if I would have known this I would have went with faster and fewer like 4GB at 1800.

I see people saying this on other forums, but never once have I seen an explanation.
