Microsoft Windows 7 to launch on October 15, 2009
Microsoft let the cat out of the bag early last week by revealing that its forthcoming operating system should be in stores for Christmas '09. That revelation, it seems, has opened the door for others as Windows enthusiast-and-blogger Paul Thurrot has now added that "you'll be able to get the final version of Windows 7 publicly on October 15, 2009." That's about as specific as it gets, and Thurrot - working, presumably, from a Microsoft-provided schedule - seems to believe the date is set in stone and suggests that would-be buyers can begin to mark their calendars. There's still no official word from Microsoft, we should add, but Thurrot's Windows 7 insight has a solid track record. So, with Microsoft's next major release just 150 days away, will you be planning a day-one purchase? Maybe not, according to Dell marketing executive Darrel Ward. Speaking in an interview, Ward suggests that although demand for the multiple editions of Windows 7 is greater than that of previous Microsoft releases, "the ASPs (average selling price) of the operating systems are higher than they were for Vista and XP". Suggesting that higher prices in tough economic times could be naive on Microsoft's part, he adds "I can tell you that the licensing tiers at retail are more expensive than they were for Vista". The news may come as a surprise to customers expecting a low-cost upgrade to the Windows Vista, and the supposedly-rising prices will also apply to business users with Windows 7 Professional expected to be more costly than Windows Vista Business. Microsoft has thus far remained tight-lipped in regards to Windows 7 pricing, but it appears Redmond's flagship operating system won't come cheap. Edited by DST4ME - 19 May 2009 at 6:59am |

Multiple versions/flavors...multiple costs...what's worth getting/paying for? Where's that "easy" button when I need it.

Wouldn't it be NICE if they gave us everything available...for one LOW price...and all we had to do was (click) to remove those parts we didn't want/need

I would prefer if they gave me less and let me add features for free. Oh wait, that sounds like linux :)

I probably won't have the money to buy Windows 7 at first... At least not Ultimate, so I'll continue using Windows 7 RC until it expires in March.

And I'll be sticking with good old XP until it's time for a new computer and Win 7 has had a chance to mello. I just bought my first copy ever of any version of Windows. It was kind of a shock. I prefer to have the cost hidden in the price of a new machine.

I LOVE VISTA!
Where's the finger icon when you need it? I never have problems with it and the eye candy is sweet (pun intended). I upgraded from Win XP and I haven't looked back. I won't, however, upgrade to Win 7 considering it's just Vista in Bill Gates clothing... so to speak. I run the 32 bit and my wife has the 64 bit... no issues. I have the RC but to me it seems like a toy. Kinda like what infints play with. It is solid and it is fast, I have to give it that.

Just bought Vista 64. As its pretty much a new OS, I don't see the point in 7 in the first place.

It's because Vista has such a bad reputation via word of mouth. Nobody tries it because they hear it sucks from people who haven't tried it themselves. So now MS goes and markets 7 as a 'fixed' Vista, and all the haters will go buy it. Lol.

Well, I am still using XP on my old Dell, I don't think I could even run Vista on my computer. I only upgraded my OS once, that was when I switched from Windows 98 to Windows ME. I've heard people didn't like Windows ME, but it worked fine for me.

I am sick of this windows7 crap. Im sticking with good ol Vista64!
Vista came out and was different then XP so it took some time to learn how to work it, and as we ALL know people HATE change. So "OMG! I cant work this new OS!! everything is new and scary! where is my box with the XP logo on the side for me to crawl back into where its safe!? This is a bigger disaster then the Bosten Mooninite bombing!!"
Also EDH63 you got riped on 32bit! it sez in your stats you got 4 gigs of dominator..sad sad.. Edited by B@d//j0ke - 23 May 2009 at 1:09am |

I'm fully aware of 4 gigs in a 32bit platform. I wanted it there when I decide to move to a 64 bit platform. But thanks for sharing. Edited by EdH63 - 23 May 2009 at 8:15am |

From what I've been reading from multiple sites, if a PC is bought after July 2nd then it is eligible to a free upgrade to its corresponding version of Windows 7. I've never used Vista before so I am not familiar with its "short comings" but I'm interested in Windows 7.

Interesting/informative...nice to know about "free" upgrades... Trouble is...will that delay some from buying computers until July 2nd. I'd think to avoid such consternation...and loss of computer sales volume...why not make ALL who buy computers from now (or the day they advertise "free" upgrades) to be eligible?? Or, proportion the cost (of upgrade) based on the time remaining to the release date--rather than all-or-nothing based onl July 2nd??

ive only had one real problem with vista.
I dont know if its vista, my computer, or internet explorer...
But there is about a 30% chance my computer will hard lock at random while surfing the net. It only happens internet explorer open. And its very random, I can go a month without it happening, and then it will come in spurts where it will hard lock several times in a row. and then totally be fine the next day...

I don't use Exploder simply because it's a slower browser than Firefox. And it seems to be more persnickety. My wife's computer was doing what you're describing at random moments and then I realized I had the 32bit version installed on her 64bit system... DOH! I fixed that and it hasn't had a problem since. I also turned off all the bull**** protocol that comes with IE8.

From what I've heard, the final build of Windows 7 isn't that great of an improvement performance wise, and is definitely not worth the money upgrading from Vista.
Apparently the beta was better than the RC :\ |

I think the only think that might give win7 an edge is if the SSD friendly performance changes they make, actually makes a difference, otherwise forget about it.

Anyone able to confirm the July 2 date for free upgrade to Windows 7? I'm almost ready to pull the trigger, but if a couple of weeks (literally) will save me hundreds in upgrade costs, I'd really like to wait the 2 weeks....

Whthawke66 just as with any other windows version, IMHO the time to get the new version is when sp1 for it comes out, that is when all the kinks are worked out, but its up to you.

True insofar as USING the doggone thing, absolutely! But to avoid having to pay extra to get it in the first place....SP 1 would probably come out around January, assuming Micro-Squich (Motto - we're bigger than you are!) stays true to usual form...That means I use the stable Vista 64 through the holidays, and then when the new must have game comes out at Christmas that's made for WIN 7 platform (and you KNOW MS will do this!) I can slide over to the relatively stable version of Win 7 they will have released for the holidays! :)
I think about this stuff WAY too much sometimes! :)
