Topic: Mid tower case Posted: 04 Jan 2011 at 12:38am |
Starting my research into a new PC. First stop is what case? Must be midtower due to room constraints.
Budget is not so much an issue, but cooling will be.
Air cooling is the direction I will be going so case must work well with that in mind.
May do sli for 2 video cards (though not set on this yet).
Hope that is enough information.

What is the resolution of your monitor? that plus what games you play decides whether you need sli or not.
a good midtower is the had 922. |

It's easy enough to configure a rig from $1500 all the way to $10,000, so you may want to narrow the budget down for us some if you want meaningful suggestions.

My over all price tage will be as high as 3500. Must be midtower case though due to room constraints.
May do sli, but only if it means better perfomance for lower cost than single highend card.
Want evga parts where ever I can get them. Had such great luck with them.
Monitor will be 24" max.
Air cooled.
Really just wanted an idea on what was the best midtower case for air cooling that can hold today's giant video cards. Midtower cases are not that expensive for any of them that I have seen.

Not possible in most cases. If dual GTX 460s vs. a single 480 you mean, that's actually not so true. Minimum fps of dual 460s just stinks. |

By the time I get any suggestions I will be retired.
Opening for the case is 8.5" wide max. Hieght is 23" maybe.
Gets wider past openning but not taller so I would say case should be no more that 22" tall.
Is open at front and back for air to flow through.
To be honest all of the questions matter not one bit. What I need is a midtower case. Thought some here may know of a good one that has allows for good or better air cooling.
Case is just a starting point. The guts will be added after I figure that part out

Forgot to add a couple to above post. Looks snarky without them.

Uh.. I wouldn't recommend small enclosed areas for cases. Even if the case fits it needs to have breathing room for intake and exhaust. If it's in a small area it's just going to end up stewing in its own warm exhaust air.

HAFs have side intakes and top exhausts, sort of a waste without any air coming in them. Many computer cases will additionally have top exhausts as standard, to facilitate the rising of hot air.

I agree with Dragon, even if it does fit, it will barely have room to breath, your temps can be high or even a problem, what is the room temp?

Just FYI, the 922 is TOO WIDE for a 8.5" zone. It's spec'd out at 10" width.
checking through your options.. Edited by ablahblah - 05 Jan 2011 at 12:22am |

You know what, I just check that and for some reason I saw it as 8" , you are right 8.5" is gonna be tough to find a case for and it will be to tight.
I think you start thinking about putting the case some place else. |

CM 334 CM 430 CM 690s Antec DF-85 (Confirm your height, this one's 23.5") Corsair 600T Silverstone TJ09 (I'd say this is best) Raven 2 and FT02/Assassin someone double check for me, hah, I've gotta run Edited by ablahblah - 05 Jan 2011 at 12:24am |

The ones that do fit will have no room to breath tho. 8.3" in an 8.5 means one inch on each side, that is a heat sandwich.

Got a point. Time to hunt for your own case to request, heh.
Silverstone PS05 would have 1" of total side clearance, and 5" of top clearance. No side mounted fans as well. Edited by ablahblah - 05 Jan 2011 at 4:57pm |

no, what you need is a new place to put your case
frankly, case is the last of your worries with an enclosed space like that.. even without a case at all you will be choking your computers need to dissapate heat. further, midtowers are becoming a thing of the past with our newer hotter hardware.
i would very much suggest picking a new location for it, which will, in turn, open a better case selection you to

Had a computer in this desk for over 10 years. No way the wife allows me any other option. She got this very nice solid oak roll top desk for my PC stuff. The thing is a beautiful desk.
Leave the PC on all day every day and it is never overly hot. Current case has no side fan. I buy a new PC every 5 years and pass my old one one to family.
But as I stated the opening is just over 8" it gets wider past that. Desk design. The space is open at front (no door) and is open at back where PC sits. Also has a couple large holes in one side for wire routing. I custom installed a fan to exhaust heat out of the upper one of these.
Best thing about this is the desk sits next to an air conditioner vent that I make use of in the warm months (front fan on case sucks that cool air in when AC is on). In winter we keep the heat in the house around 68.
Thanks for all the responses. Going with an cooler master elite 430. Seems like the perfect case for my needs.

Ok but keep in mind these newer parts run much warmer then the old counter part, the exhaust fan was a great idea, the ac vent will be great during winter, 68f room temp is great also, maybe you will be fine after all, but its not something I would recommend, Please let use know when you get this pc and tell us how your temps are, now I'm very interested to see.
Our pleasure and good luck Edited by DST4ME - 08 Jan 2011 at 3:40am |
