AMD 4800-series mobile GPUs gain PCIe approval

AMD's next-gen laptop graphics chips, the 'M96' and the 'M98-L', have been approved by the PCI SIG - the body that oversees the PCI Express bus.

The parts follow on from M86 and M88, AMD's Radeon Mobility 3800 series GPUs, the most recent of which, the 3850, was only launched last month.

M96 and M98-L will be mobile equivalents of the 'RV770' desktop GPU that (also) debuted last month, as the Radeon HD 4800 series.

Having only just announced the 3850, it seems unlikely that the 4850 would debut in the near future, and indeed a late Q3/early Q4 release window is the one most being talked about.

I sure hope that DS plans on using these when they come out. I will be THE first to order a dual 4800 Series laptop. =] Maybe in i7 will be powering them? Ermm

I can dream...

what you need to do is set a date and no matter what, the latest thing available by that date is what you can choose from, otherwise, every 3 month or so there is a reason to wait

Im hoping by Nov. 30th they will have i7's and 4800 series gpu's in laptops. If not im just going with my build in my siggy.

From what ive read though, the mobile versions of the 4800's arent going to be slowed down much at all. If this is true, ATI will most definitely take the high-end mobile gpu market.

I hope you realize Clarksfields (mobile Nehalem) aren't coming until the second half of 2009. So have fun waiting a year I guess =\
