I never really understood how to hookup more than 1 video card to 1 monitor?

All i know about the 5870 is that you need one display port for it to work

You just take your vga/dvi/hdmi cable from the top card and hook it up.  you don't need to worry about the other two cards.  apologies in advance if i misunderstood your question and this was obvious.

any monitor will work, does not have to be HDMI or DP.
 Nvidia GTX SLI 480's  470's, sorry no 3 monitors for them, for now,, Nvidia mught get it working, but for now it is broken
ATI can run 6 off one card, or 5, or 3 monitors, depending on what GPU you have.
