    Posted: 20 Feb 2009 at 8:10pm
I posted this under the Reccomended Monitors but I am not getting any replies so I am starting a new topic.

I am looking for a new monitor but only want to spend around $400 (put most of my money in my new DS rig that is stuck in stage 2).  Does anyone have the Hanns-G 28" LCD and if so could you share your opinion?  I play mostly first person shooter games and would like to upgrade from my Dell 2005FP Ultrasharp.

My new DS rig will come with the GTX 295.  I am not hooked on the Hanns but it looks like a pretty good one for the price.

Also how important is contrast ratio? The dell one I have now is 600:1 and when watching news from CNN or other news outlets in full screen it looks very poor.

Thanks to everyone who replys.

Thanks for the reply.  I am trying to get a bigger monitor (old guy) that I can dual use as a TV.  I know my price limit hurts but I have found a few that are good.

I am however glad you sent me that site, the have a viewsonic 28" in my price range.

Yea, good prices.  I checked the pricing at other sites and they are much cheaper for the exact same product.

Not to rain on any parades, but I've had a viewsonic monitor before...bought it at Costco on the cheap, and I got what I paid for. The bastard only lasted 2 years then it just stopped working. Just my experience anywho. Last I saw there were some good ASUS monitors on newegg not too long ago. They once had a 25.3" for $350 but I beleive it's sold out right now.

That sounds like a great idea scaner.  I would love to see the pictures of the monitor and the pictures of everyone's work area, gaming area, or just the man cave if you know what I mean.

E06026,

I do not recommend this monitor if you are really touchy on color contrast. It also is not very good in the dark games, as it becomes almost impossible to see anything without setting the brightness to a level that the colored areas not dark start to hurt the eyes.

With that in mind, i still love mine. It does its job fine. Games generally arnt required to have awesome contrast ratios and what have you. The only time you really need a very sharp image is with photo editing. If you do that, then for sure dont get this one. Though check it out in a store first if you can. Why spend extra money on a super sharp image when you dont really need that in the first place?

Also dont listen to scaners Ratio he listed in his first post, its a common marketing scam, so keep a watch on it. the 20,000:1 is DYNAMIC contrast, the 800:1 on yours is the general contrast.

Dynamic is a new form of "measuring" they are starting to use. But I honestly believe it is just so they can show bloated numbers to confuse the people that dont know any better.

Thanks SunfighterLC, I went to Micro Center today and checked out the Hannz-G HG2801D and I did like it.  I play Call of Duty 5 in a clan so not sure how the Hannz would be. If you were going to buy something different what would you get?

Honestly its been a while since my search for a montior (year+ now). So my info would be dated. Plus im very content with this one i have now. So I wouldnt bother to get another one.

The darkness issue is only issue ive noticed with this monitor. Just keep in mind, it isnt the best of the best, its an average monitor. It is basically a pure gaming monitor. a bare bones monitor with no flashy features or lots of connectors. It has just 1 HDMI connector, and 1 VGA connector, and a power connector...that is it. There is a reason why the price is so low on them.

But mine has run flawlessly. and IMHO has a better picture then my 2233 syncmaster that scaner talks about it. I guess its just the persons own eyes that decide what is best for them.

1000:1 contrast ratio (20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio)
Provides a high number of shades between black and white. This range enables accurate color reproduction for excellent picture quality.
im just told EVERY BODY HAVE HIS OWN OPINION..AND TASTE.AND PRICE. Between best buy.com or buy.com//So this is just your chose.

If I could find a 15% off coupon I would be buying either the 27" or the 30" from here.

Yea, I have both a 2233 syncmaster as scaner has, and a HG281D.

The Hanns is on my gaming/internet computer, and the syncmaster is on my photo editing/business computer. I still think the picture sucks on it though, ive played with the settings on it for hours and i still think the picture on the syncmaster looks funny...maybe mines broken or something... I dont know...

Ill admit, im not very picky on the picture quality. The Hanns G fits my wants and nothing more, nothing less. Which is exactlly what i wanted. Your needs might be different.

Also note that if youre still seeing a hanns-G in a store, it might be fairly old. They dont make them anymore as far as i know. I got the last one at my local Best Buy well over a year ago, They wanted to push them out to make room for the new model which honestly looks almost exactly the same, but sells under the name Hannspree. Mine was a display model which i got for 329.99
